Bernhard Oberreither analyzes in the context of historical and contemporary fetish discourses how supposedly innocent things often turn out to be the key to the enigmatic structure of Paulus Hochgatterer's texts, and how his texts can be read at the same time as a highly reflected commentary on the always precarious, suspicious, sometimes »corrupt« (Hartmut Böhme) relationship of man to his things.

This collection of original essays brings together museum, theatre, and performance case studies with a focus on their distinctive and overlapping modes of producing memory for transnational audiences. Whether this is through narrative, object, embodied encounter or a combination of the three, this volume considers distinctions and interactions between memory and history specifically through the lenses of theatre and performance studies, visual culture, and museum and curator studies. This book is underpinned by three areas of research enquiry: How are contemporary theatre makers and museum curators staging historical narratives of difficult pasts? How might comparisons between theatre and museum practices offer new insights into the role objects play in generating and representing difficult pasts? What points of overlap, comparison, and contrast among these constructions of history and memory of authoritarianism, slavery, colonialism, genocide, armed conflict, fascism, and communism might offer an expanded understanding of difficult pasts in these transnational cultural contexts? This collection is designed for any scholar of its central disciplines, as well as for those interested in cultural geography, memory studies, and postcolonial theory. This Open Access biography chronicles the life and achievements of the Norwegian engineer and physicist Rolf Widerøe. Readers who meet him in the pages of this book will wonder why he isn't better known. The first of Widerøe's many pioneering contributions in the field of accelerator physics was the betatron, the second, the linear accelerator, both summarized in a 27 page PhD. The betatron revolutionized the fields of cancer treatment through radiation therapy and also nondestructive testing; hospitals worldwide installed Widerøe's machine and today’s modern radiation treatment equipment is based on his inventions. The most recent renaissance of the linac provides unprecedented x-ray intensities at Free Electron Laser (FEL) facilities in operation and construction worldwide. . Widerøe’s story also includes a fair share of drama, particularly during World War II when both Germans and the Allies vied for his collaboration. Widerøe held leading positions in multinational industry groups and was one of the consultants for building the world's largest nuclear laboratory, CERN, in Switzerland. He gained over 200 patents, received several honorary doctorates and a number of international awards. The author, a professional writer and maker of TV documentaries, has gained access to hitherto restricted archives in several countries, which provided a wealth of new material and insights, in particular in relation to the war years. She tells here a gripping and illuminating story.

This book explores the striking range of dreams recounted by Shoah survivors who give narrative form to their traumatic experiences. Dreams are ambiguous and contradictory; their relationship to reality is unsteady. Dream experiences feature overwhelming sensory and bodily perceptions, and their aesthetic autonomy transforms waking life and thought into unsettling images. All of this makes dreams a fertile mode of storytelling in the face of the Shoah’s unspeakability. Each of the dream texts collected in this book speaks a singular language. Yet systematically comparing writings from different languages and cultures reveals recurring patterns: dreams of thwarted homecomings, of impeded storytelling, of murdered relatives appearing alive, and of abrupt return to the camps. What emerges is an extraordinary panorama of themes and narratives used in attempts to articulate the Shoah through writing. The texts reveal themselves to be a paradoxical cultural practice of reparation—individual and collective—by which irreparable experiences are processed through the act of telling.

The study deals with the cutting-edge subject of electronic contracts which have the potential to automatically process and control the access rights for (electronic) goods. It shows the design and the implementation of a rights expression exchange framework. The framework allows DRM systems to exchange electronic contracts, formulated in a standardized rights expression language, and thus provides DRM system interoperability. The work introduces a methodology for the standardized composition, exchange and processing of electronic contracts or rights expressions.

This open access multi-authored book presents a 'state of the science' synthesis of knowledge on the biodiversity of Angola, based on sources in peer-reviewed journals, in books and where appropriate, unpublished official reports. The book identifies Angola as one of the most biologically diverse countries in Africa, but notes that its fauna, flora, habitats and the processes that drive the dynamics of its ecosystems are still very poorly researched and documented. This 'state of the science' synthesis is for the use of all students of Angola's biodiversity, and for those responsible for the planning, development and sustainable management of the country's living resources. The volume brings together the results of expeditions and research undertaken in Angola since the late eighteenth century, with emphasis on work conducted in the four decades since Angola's independence in 1975. The individual chapters have been written by leaders in their fields, and reviewed by peers familiar with the region.

Computer vision-based safety monitoring requires machine learning models trained on generalized datasets covering various viewpoints, surface properties, and lighting conditions. However, capturing high-quality and extensive datasets for some construction scenarios is challenging at real job sites due to the risky nature of construction scenarios. Previous methods have proposed synthetic data generation techniques involving 2D background randomization with virtual objects in game-based engines. While there has been extensive work on utilizing 360-degree images for various purposes, no study has yet employed 360-degree images for generating synthetic data specifically tailored for construction sites. To improve the synthetic data generation process, this study proposes a 360-degree images-based synthetic data generation approach using Unity 3D game engine. The approach efficiently generates a sizable dataset with better dimensions and scaling, encompassing a range of camera positions with randomized lighting intensities. To check the effectiveness of our proposed method, we conducted a subjective evaluation, considering three key factors: object positioning, scaling in terms of object respective size, and the overall size of the generated dataset. The synthesized images illustrate the visual improvement in all three factors. By offering an improved data generation method for training safety-focused computer vision models, this research has the potential to significantly enhance the automation of the construction safety monitoring process, and hence, this method can bring substantial benefits to the construction industry by improving operational efficiency and reinforcing safety measures for workers

The purpose of writing this book is to provide the latest research findings in ground control techniques in mining engineering, especially the rock bolting techniques. Since rock bolts are widely used in mining engineering and civil engineering, they are significant in guaranteeing the safety of underground openings. However, instability issues still occur with the rock bolting technique. Therefore, it is valuable to understand the exact load transfer mechanism of rock bolts. This book summarised the recent research work regarding rock bolting conducted by the authors. It is valuable for the readers to fully understand the reinforcing mechanism of fully grouted rock bolts. This book focuses on the bond failure mode of fully grouted rock bolts, which is the most widely encountered failure mode in rock bolting. Different investigation approaches are used in this book, including numerical simulation, analytical modelling and experimental tests. Therefore, this book conducts a comprehensive study to reveal the bond failure process of fully grouted rock bolts. Moreover, it reveals the corresponding bond failure mechanism. Therefore, it helps the reads to fully understand the bond failure mechanism of rock bolting. Moreover, it helps the readers to develop new approaches and methods to prevent failure of the rock bolting system. This is an open access book.

Social media is at the core of digital transformations in organizations. Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and other social media platforms widen the scope for rapid and effective communication with stakeholders. They also create a range of new and challenging ethical dilemmas. This open access book categorizes the dilemmas organizations across a range of industries can face when they implement social media to communicate with stakeholders. This book provides a systematic framework for analyzing these ethical dilemmas in social media using the Navigation Wheel. This tool leads the decision-maker through a series of considerations such as legal questions, corporate identity, morality, reputation, and ethics. Finally, the author considers implications for leaders and presents potential solutions to these dilemmas. Based on five years of original research with 250 executive students at a European business school, all of whom work with social media communications in their organizations, this book is the first major study to explore the ethical use of social media across industries and is a valuable resource for researchers and practitioners alike.
