Der Band befasst sich mit den ethischen Aspekten interkultureller Praxis und ethnologischen Verstehens. Sein Ziel besteht nicht in der abstrakten Definition ethischer Universalien, sondern in der Beschreibung jener Unvereinbarkeiten, aber auch Ergänzungsmöglichkeiten, die sich aus dem Zusammentreffen unterschiedlicher ethischer Traditionen in einer gemeinsamen Lebenswelt ergeben. Die Beiträge nähern sich dem Problem interkultureller und interreligiöser Konflikte daher aus einer anderen Perspektive an als die Debatten um universelle ethische Werte oder um ein gemeinsames Weltethos. Während diese davon ausgehen, dass ethische und kulturelle Differenzen in einer globalen Praxis nur durch die Rückbindung an universelle Prinzipien zu bewältigen sind, loten die hier versammelten Beiträge jene kreativen Spielräume der wechselseitigen Ergänzung und Selbstreflexion aus, die sich aus der Begegnung verschiedener Wissenskulturen und Wertvorstellungen ergeben.

Afterlives of war documents the lives and historical pursuits of the generations who grew up in Australia, Britain and Germany after the First World War. Although they were not direct witnesses to the conflict, they experienced its effects from their earliest years. Based on ninety oral history interviews and observation during the First World War Centenary, this pioneering study reveals the contribution of descendants to the contemporary memory of the First World War, and the intimate personal legacies of the conflict that animate their history-making.

Laurette d'Alsace, daughter of the Comte de Flandre, was married to four members of the northern French aristocracy and finally retreated to the Abbaye de Forest in Brussels. She was to remain there until her death in 1170, and it was at Forest that she seems to have provided the impetus for this scholarly commentary on the Psalms both to be begun and, eventually, completed. This book, originally published as two paperback volumes in 1990 under the ISBNs 978-0-947623-31-9 and 978-0-947623-32-6, was made Open Access in 2024 as part of the MHRA Revivals programme.

Economics

Confronted with an increase in floods, droughts and other natural hazards, cities and regions are alert to find climate proof solutions that overcome the limitations of traditional grey infrastructure. Nature-based solutions are proposed as a valid way to address risk and adapt to climate change while increasing resilience through the multiple benefits they generate. However, in spite of the widespread academic and political support for NBS, their implementation is lacking. As key barriers to implementation there are institutional and regulatory barriers, an absence of clear evaluation of NBS performance, funding/financing barriers and knowledge and acceptance barriers. This Open Access book provides a hands-on guide to overcome these barriers, through the stepwise creation of nature-assurance schemes that operationalize the insurance value of ecosystems. At the basis thereof is an integrated biophysical, economic and social assessment which is integrated with implementation considerations through the generation of business models and blended funding and financing schemes. This book will be of interest to practitioners and researchers who want to better understand how to operationalize the insurance value of ecosystems. The book provides 9 DEMO examples on the application of this method across different scales: urban, medium and large catchments and target both floods and droughts.

Dessen Auslegung zur Suche nach Haftungsgrund und -grenzen bietet als zentralen Befund, dass einzig der historisch eindeutig belegte Einsatzzweck von Nebenpflichten zur Kompensation deliktsrechtlicher Mängel als Funktion von § 241 II BGB vollumfänglich überzeugt. For reasons of effectiveness, efficiency and equity, Australian law reform should be planned carefully. Academics can and should take the lead in this process. Es skizziert die Entwicklung der Opferschutzvorschriften in der Strafprozessordnung und auf europäischer Ebene und setzt sich mit den Begründungen des strafprozessualen Opferschutzes auseinander. Doch sind Opfer gleich Opfer? Unterscheiden sich terroristische Anschläge von anderen Straftaten? Untersucht werden hierzu die politischen, medialen, gesellschaftlichen, psychotraumatologischen und individuellen Auswirkungen von (terroristischen) Anschlägen auf Betroffene. Die psychosozialen Bedürfnisse der Opfer werden in Bezug zu den bestehenden strafprozessualen Opferrechten gesetzt. Schlussendlich werden neue Konzepte und informelle Zugänge innerhalb des Strafverfahrens diskutiert, um Opferbedürfnissen entgegenzukommen und Bewältigungsstrategien zu fördern.

The Social Dynamics of Open Data is a collection of peer reviewed papers presented at the 2nd Open Data Research Symposium (ODRS) held in Madrid, Spain, on 5 October 2016. Research is critical to developing a more rigorous and fine-combed analysis not only of why open data is valuable, but how it is valuable and under what specific conditions. The objective of the Open Data Research Symposium and the subsequent collection of chapters published here is to build such a stronger evidence base. This base is essential to understanding what open datas impacts have been to date, and how positive impacts can be enabled and amplified. Consequently, common to the majority of chapters in this collection is the attempt by the authors to draw on existing scientific theories, and to apply them to open data to better explain the socially embedded dynamics that account for open datas successes and failures in contributing to a more equitable and just society.
