How did the integration of Jews into Dutch society influenced Jewish resistance during the German occupation of the Netherlands in the Second World War? In this book Ben Braber answers the question how the integration of Jews into Dutch society influenced Jewish resistance during the German occupation of the Netherlands in the second world war. This study highlights the social position of Jews and their group characteristics, but also reviews other factors that determined what forms Jewish resistance took such as personal character and individual circumstance. This is the first comprehensive study of this subject in the English language of Jewish resistance in the Netherlands. It offers a new perspective on Jews during the Holocaust and counters the prejudice about Jews failing to resist persecution. This book is also relevant for today's multi-ethnical society. It is a case study about the hampered integration of a minority, in particular how people in this group react when they are forcefully segregated and persecuted, while thinkingthis cannot happen here.

This open access book addresses the problem of global urban development that excludes various groups of people from the benefits of urban growth and sustainable development. Using the intersectionality and agency of urban dwellers and citizens, it outlines possibilities of responsive urban governance that builds on principles of the inclusive city. The book's first section presents various cases of digital, smart, logistical, and green infrastructure that drive a city's growth and sustainable development while excluding various citizens from these benefits. The second and third sections focus on the intersectionality and agency of urban citizens vulnerable to marginalization in different urban contexts—such as the elderly, people with various physical and mental challenges, women, and children. The last section presents the cases of potential forms of responsive governance and possibilities for future inclusive city planning and development. This book appeals to students of urban and development studies and planning and related disciplines, such as human and cultural geography, applied anthropology, sociology, sustainability sciences, architecture, and design. It is also helpful for activists and practitioners as illustrative cases presented in the book show various experiences and possibilities for making a city inclusive.

The Dutch film maker Joris Ivens (1898-1989) was one of the founding fathers of documentary film. The career of this eternal traveller spanned over sixty years, from his first film in the twenties to his last, finished at the age of ninety. Among Ivens's friends and collaborators were leading filmmakers and actors like Eisenstein, Pudovkin, Dovzhenko, Chaplin, Milestone, Capra, Losey, Flaherty, Grierson, De Santis, the Taviani brothers, Signoret, Montand and Marker. In his early years Joris Ivens was a prominent figure in the international film avant-garde. From the thirties onwards he became, according to American film historian Robert Sklar, 'the most important political filmmaker of the decade, probably of the century'. His films on Soviet socialism, the Spanish Civil War, the Indonesian struggle for independence, the Vietnam-war and the Cuban and Chinese revolutions, make him a subject of controversy in any debate on the relationship between art and propaganda. Hans Schoots has based his biography on new research of Ivens complete filmwork and of unknown production-documents, personal letters and diaries, found in many archives, such as Ivens's FBI-dossier and State Archives in Moscow and former Eastern-Berlin. Artistic and political milieus in Amsterdam, Berlin, Moscow, New York, Hollywood, Paris, Havana, Hanoi and Beijing provide the background of this fascinating life-story.

This book explores the importance of social and emotional learning (SEL) in schools to foster supportive environments and good relationships. It presents research from nine different countries with discussion of how teachers, teacher students and policy makers can ensure successful SEL at school. The book stresses the importance of social and emotional learning to allow students to become more autonomous and active in their own learning and also presents very innovative ways in learning and teaching the skills. It makes the case for understanding the processes of how SEL can develop and how it can work in different cultural contexts, considering different challenges of implementing SEL within the school context. The chapters draw on theoretical discussions illustrated by practical examples and explore the role of teacher training on SEL and how SEL can be applied within the school curriculum. Discussing an increasingly important topic in the field of education around the world, this book will be of great interest to academics, researchers, educational leaders, and university teacher trainers interested in developing social and emotional learning and overall well-being at school.

Digital sovereignty has become a hotly debated concept. The current convergence of multiple crises adds fuel to this debate, as it contextualizes the concept in a foundational discussion of democratic principles, civil rights, and national identities: is (technological) self-determination an option for every individual to cope with the digital sphere effectively? Can disruptive events provide chances to rethink our ideas of society - including the design of the objects and processes which constitute our techno-social realities? The positions assembled in this volume analyze opportunities for participation and policy-making, and describe alternative technological practices before and after the pandemic.

In this book, world-leading social scientists come together to provide original insights on the capacities and limitations of insurance in a changing world. Climate change is fundamentally changing the ways we insure, and the ways we think about insurance. This book moves beyond traditional economics and financial understandings of insurance to address the social and geopolitical dimensions of this powerful and pervasive part of contemporary life. Insurance shapes material and social realities, and is shaped by them in turn. The contributing authors of this book show how insurance constitutes and is constituted through the traditional elements of earth, water, air, fire, and the novel element of big data. The applied and theoretical insights presented through this novel elemental approach reveal that insurance is more dynamic, multifaceted, and spatially variegated than commonly imagined. This book is an authoritative source on the capacities and limitations of insurance. It is a go-to reference for researchers and students in the social sciences – particularly those with an interest in economics and finance, and how these intersect with geography, politics, and society. It is also relevant for those in the disaster, environmental, health, natural, and social sciences who are interested in the role of insurance in addressing risk, resilience, and adaptation. This open access book discusses how citizenship is performed today, mostly through the optic of the arts, in particular the performing arts, but also from the perspective of a wide range of academic disciplines such as urbanism and media studies, cultural education and postcolonial theory. It is a compendium that includes insights from artistic and activist experimentation. Each chapter investigates a different aspect of citizenship, such as identity and belonging, rights and responsibilities, bodies and materials, agencies and spaces, and limitations and interventions. It rewrites and rethinks the many-layered concept of citizenship by emphasising the performative tensions produced by various uses, occupations, interpretations and framings.

When the Church of Sweden General Synod decided to open the priesthood to women on 28 September 1958, a long theological and political debate came to an end. On Palm Sunday in 1960 the first three women were ordained as priests; over the next ten years, 54 women were ordained. This book centres on their narratives of vocation and recognition. At the heart of the book are the narratives of 34 of the first ordained women, detailing their journey to ordination and their early years in parish service. The narratives are analysed against the backdrop of the theological and historical contexts of vocation and recognition that shaped these women's narratives, describing the warm and widespread recognition they received from colleagues, bishops and parishes as well as the conditional, or even withheld, recognition they sometimes faced. Through this close reading of the vocation narratives, established historical narratives of the opening of the priesthood to women are complemented and challenged. The book also places the Swedish experience in a broader context by exploring the ecumenical and international influences that impacted the process, using the dual analytical lens of vocation and recognition to point to parallels and connections across denominational and national boundaries.

Fault detection, control, and forecasting have a vital role in renewable energy systems (Photovoltaics (PV) and wind turbines (WTs)) to improve their productivity, ef?ciency, and safety, and to avoid expensive maintenance. For instance, the main crucial and challenging issue in solar and wind energy production is the volatility of intermittent power generation due mainly to weather conditions. This fact usually limits the integration of PV systems and WTs into the power grid. Hence, accurately forecasting power generation in PV and WTs is of great importance for daily/hourly efficient management of power grid production, delivery, and storage, as well as for decision-making on the energy market. Also, accurate and prompt fault detection and diagnosis strategies are required to improve efficiencies of renewable energy systems, avoid the high cost of maintenance, and reduce risks of fire hazards, which could affect both personnel and installed equipment. This book intends to provide the reader with advanced statistical modeling, forecasting, and fault detection techniques in renewable energy systems.

Figures of Chance II: Chance in Theory and Practice proposes a multidisciplinary analysis of cultural phenomena related to notions of chance and contingency Alongside its transhistorical companion volume (Figures of Chance I), it considers how the projective and predictive capacity of societies is shaped by representations and cultural models of a reality that is understood, by varying degrees, to be contingent, unpredictable, or chaotic. This volume reevaluates the role played by figurative representations of chance in contemporary discourses about chance and contingency. Written by seven interdisciplinary teams, and encompassing philosophy, literature, history of science, sociology, mathematics, cognitive science, information science, and art history, this text puts scientific conceptions of chance into dialogue with their contemporary literary and artistic representations. It thus brings out the central role played by art in the human perception of chance, and in our methods for projecting the future, in order to better understand contemporary human attitudes in the face of risk.

Increasing mechanization is profoundly changing our social areas of life as well as cultural orders and knowledge systems. Concepts of health and illness are also permeated by such technology. A variety of communication techniques are used in the medicalized everyday life: new biotechnologies are combining with home and life techniques; for a long time, a digital self-measurement market has been developed by application techniques; such as, Smartphones, data glasses and Smartwatches. In the meantime, it is easier and faster to operate medical devices and systems. In addition, the data obtained can be exchanged and analyzed faster and faster. A so-called assisted health technology and new information and communication options make the interface between human and machine blurred. The anthology addresses fundamental social, cultural and ethical questions of human-technology interaction and, from a cultural and social scientific research perspective, addresses the question of how technology alters everyday life, cultural orders and knowledge systems.
