When Eagles Are Allowed to Fly--A Global and Contextual Perspective on Teacher Education in EthiopiaThe present reconfiguration of education by neo-liberal forces worldwide is taken as a basis for this essay. Drawing on examples of how this reconfiguration operates on national arenas through decisive and dishonest discourses of commoditisation and privatisation, management and efficiency, education for all and student-centred education, the essay looks at the Ethiopian case and how neo-liberalism operates on that arena and how a counter-hegemonic agenda was implanted through a master course for teacher educators following a different and critical practitioner inquiry approach modelling emancipation and social justice within teacher education and society at large. The term pedagogy has been appropriated in education discourse as simply strategies of instruction. This instrumental understanding of pedagogy has reified the term both in the vernacular of education and in research of teaching and teacher education, leading the scientific pursuit of pedagogy to exclude the relationship between pedagogy and pedagogue. Based on this concern, this paper will consider the artistic and relational dimensions of pedagogy in teacher education. Drawing on the perspective that pedagogy is akin to art, this paper seeks to sketch a more holistic understanding of pedagogy in teacher education. Afterwards, I suggest self-study of teacher education as a suitable epistemic frame to appreciate the artistry of pedagogy in higher education.

As new estimates of state revenues continue to emerge, public officials struggle to understand their implications for public education. The goal of this analysis is to produce rapid projections of the effects on public education of the most recent estimates of declines in state revenues. More specifically, what's sought are both estimates of the degree to which K-12 education spending could be cut under a specified set of assumptions and the corresponding effect on employment. This analysis summarizes both the magnitude of projected reductions in state spending on K-12 education and the projected impact on job loss in K-12 education. (Contains 2 tables, 1 figure, and 9 notes.)

Ed McCrea, former executive director of North American Association for Environmental Education (NAEE), calls the development of the environmental education guidelines the single most important event that has occurred in the field of environmental education in the last decade. For the first time in its history, environmental education has a set of tools that promotes unity, a common language, and the professionalization of the field. These guidelines, which are described in this document, grew from NAAEE's desire to ensure that environmental education was a part of the national standards movement. Most of all, the guidelines offer a way to ensure that environmental education materials, programs, and practitioners are of the highest possible quality.

This paper presents the historical growth of teacher education in Ghana and the various attempts made to ensure that societal demands are met as far as teacher effectiveness and supply are concerned. Since the colonial period, teacher education has received the desired attention. This attention is seen in the manner in which teacher education has been changing both in structure and content. Various governments have been quick to realise that education holds the key to the development of the nation and at the heart of the education system is the teacher. In this Paper, the writers present the development of teacher education from 1925 to 1997.

In this paper, these questions are addressed in the context of history and circumstances of educational development in Bangladesh, as the Government attempts to put into effect a new national education policy and design a five year (2011-15) national development plan. This guide is intended for students, career counsellors and others assisting vocational education and training (VET) students in the credit transfer process. It is based on research that set out to identify the core elements required to negotiate successful pathways from VET to higher education. Credit transfer structures between Deakin University and three Victorian TAFE institutes, as well as the experience of enterprise registered training organisations, were used as case studies. The guide offers some strategies and guidance from the research which may assist students who seek recognition for their VET learning. [This guide is based upon the "Crediting Vocational Education and Training for Learner Mobility" report. For the full report, see ED509572.]
