MICROCOMPUTER EXPERT SYSTEMS IN TRANSPORTATION ENGINEERING
•
Abstract
This paper reviews microcomputer-based expert systems in transportation engineering. Expert systems have great potential for solving ill-structured problems and for becoming useful tools for practicing transportation engineers. First, a brief overview of expert systems is provided, including basic characteristics, knowledge representation methods, the steps in building an expert system and the evolutionary levels of system development. A number of individual systems are then reviewed using a classification framework involving both level of development and dominant functional application in transportation engineering.
