The Individualized Education Program: Key to an Appropriate Education for the Handicapped Child. 1977 Annual Report.
Overview & Synopsis
The 1977 annual report of the National Advisory Committee on the Handicapped focuses on implementation of individualized education programs (IEPs) for handicapped children, as mandated in P.L. 94-142, the Education For All Handicapped Children Act. Five recommendations are made, including the recommendation for increased appropriation for inservice teacher education. Issues involved in implementing the IEP concept are reviewed; considerations in teacher education and training are discussed; and the role of physical education, recreation, and leisure in formation of IEPs is described. Examined is the IEP process at two institutions: the National Technical Institute for the Deaf, and the Model Secondary School for the Deaf. Cited are excerpts on the IEP from P.L. 94-142, Senate and House colloquys, and special congressional reports. A final section reviews the status of the Committee's 1976 recommendations. (CL)
