Reconsidering Basic Resources for Modern Statistics Teaching and Learning: Opening the Dialogue
Overview & Synopsis
This study discusses the findings of two distinct research efforts that explored how a specific resource, namely dynamic software tools for teaching statistics, was negotiated and integrated into teaching practice. Through a systematic analysis of the findings of these two cases, we draw conclusions about the significance of this resource and the conditions necessary for its effective use. Our findings indicate that dynamic software plays a central role in statistics education. However, challenges such as inadequate infrastructure, limited time, and insufficient opportunities for collaboration within the school setting are persistent barriers to the reform of statistics teaching. These issues highlight the need to reassess contemporary learning goals and reconceptualize the basic resources needed for teaching statistics. Additionally, we discuss how redefining these resources could promote equal opportunities and democratize statistics education in an era dominated by big data.
