Comparison of “What numbers make sense?” problems solving in the Czech Republic and Lithuania
Overview & Synopsis
The aim of the paper is to investigate fifth-grade pupils' strategies when solving a non-traditional word problem in the Czech Republic and Lithuania. Unlike typical word problems that can be solved by merely extracting numerical data and question words, the approach used in this study involves "What numbers make sense" word problems that demand a deeper understanding of the story of the problem. The purpose of this study is to assess pupils’ solution strategies, their argumentation skills, and attention to linguistic limitations.
