The rate control policy for virtual memory management
Overview & Synopsis
We present an algorithm for the control of a multiprogramming virtual memory system which introduces processes into the multiprogramming set at a rate proportional to their departure rate, and which eliminates processes if their paging activity exceeds a certain level. A model of the system with this controlpolicy allows us to show that it avoids thrashing, and that its performance is close to that obtained by an «optimal» control. We also obtain response time curves for différent classes of tasks.
