Investigation of Municipal Solid Waste Landfill's Stability by considering its Temperature
Overview & Synopsis
Municipal solid waste (MSW) landfills typically have elevated temperatures due to the presence of both anaerobic and aerobic degradation processes. These processes can generate temperatures that range from 40-70°C. Considering the temperature of landfills can help produce more logical and realistic outcomes. Studying landfill stability is an important issue because slope failure of MSW landfills could cause environmental problems. As these landfills are usually located near highly populated areas, this increases the importance of investigating landfills' behavior. Two major products of landfill degradation are gas and leachate. The major generated gas is carbon which is a dangerous one and could lead to air pollution. The entrance of leachate into the groundwater due to slope failure is harmful, too. So, failure of landfill slope could cause these products to be entered the environment and lead to air and water pollution. To analyze the effect of MSW landfills due to high temperature and moisture accurately, is required to use the Thermo-Hydro-Mechanical (THM) method that attracted the attention of many researchers in recent years. The investigation of MSW landfill stability with considering of temperature is studied in this paper.
