Rationalizing Informality : Social Protection, Job Quality, and Growth - Overview
Overview & Synopsis
From a distance, developing-country labor markets appear unordered, even chaotic. Only a minority of workers, recognizable to advanced-country observers, work in large modern firms with legal contracts. The majority labor in a state of informality. This volume argues that despite the chaotic appearance, the difference between the developing-country and advanced-country labor markets is more one of degree than of kind, and that the informal sector, when disaggregated to the right level, shows very similar dynamics and logic.
