Overview & Synopsis

This article explores the origins, development, and contemporary relevance of the Order of Saint Stephen (Ordine di Santo Stefano Papa e Martire), established in 1561 by Grand Duke Cosimo I de’ Medici as a dynastic and state order of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany. Conceived as both a religious-military institution and an instrument of Medicean statecraft, the Order played a strategic role in Mediterranean defense and in consolidating noble loyalty within the Tuscan territories. The study examines its canonical recognition, internal statutes, and the symbolic and geopolitical functions it fulfilled over the centuries. Particular attention is given to the legal survival of the Order following the extinction of the Popolano line of the Medici, and to its present continuity under the Grand Ducal House of Medici in exile. The article clarifies common misconceptions, distinguishes the historical order from later imitations, and analyses its enduring legitimacy according to both public law and dynastic right.
