Overview & Synopsis

Volume 2 of the handbook provides an overview of research findings from recent decades on the subject of language and space, with a focus on Switzerland. It revisits aspects already covered in Volume 1 from specific perspectives and explores them in greater depth through individual studies. The range of contributions extends from the application of current linguistic-geographical methods for the collection and visualisation of dialectal data to methodologically innovative studies on influence and adaptation in the language use of different generations, regions or countries. Language and space are to be understood not only in geographical terms, but also in social, perceptual and media-related terms. Some of the studies stem from the interdisciplinary University Research Centre ‘Language and Space’, which operated at the University of Zurich between 2013 and 2024, bringing together geographers and linguists from various disciplinary backgrounds.
