Color terminologies in Japhug and other Rgyalrongic languages
Overview & Synopsis
This paper deals with the expression of colors in Japhug and other Rgyalrongic languages. It shows that Rgyalrongic languages share a set of six basic color stative verbs, which are cognate in all subbranches of this subgroup. In order to express more specific colorations, derivation and compounding of basic color verbs can be used. Alternatively, color nouns borrowed from Tibetan and denominal stative verbs derived from them can serve to express some colors. Finally, ideophones and deideophonic verbs can convey intricate meanings related to hues and brightness, in combination with the basic stative verbs.
