ACETANILIDE : A CRYSTAL WITH HYDROGEN-BONDED CHAINS. OPTICAL AND NEUTRON SCATTERING INVESTIGATIONS
Overview & Synopsis
Crystalline acetanilide (ACN) is ananharmonic solid characterised by soft hydrogen bonded chains of molecules. Anomalies in the I. R. and Raman mode spectra were recently observed at low temperature. Several theoretical models have been proposed to explaint hese anomalies, involving alternatively, Davydov-like solitons, localized modes, topological defects or Fermi resonance. We present optical measurements : birefringence, Brillouin scatteringand I. R. absorption in the 700-800 cm-1 range. Inelastic neutron scattering results are also summarized. On the basis of these new results the different theoretical models are discussed.
