Modelling in the learning of the definite integral for civil engineering
Overview & Synopsis
In this paper, we show one part of a much broader research focused on designing a modelling sequence to promote the understanding of the definite integral (DI) from the perspective of models and modelling (MMP) through activities that involve accumulation processes. We present part of the design and how it is intended to be implemented with a group of civil engineering students taking the Integral Calculus course. The sequence's design aims to address issues related to the learning of the DI, its interpretation, and its use in specialised courses, particularly in solving problems closely related to the workplace. Furthermore, we review some of the design principles proposed within the MMP and share our reflections on how they might be adapted and used as a guide for designing activities aimed at specific groups of higher education or university students.
