Realizing Measurable Value from Agile MBSE in Small Satellite Missions : A CubeSat Reference Model for the NewSpace
Overview & Synopsis
Among established space agencies, MBSE maturity has been achieved through decade of well-customized and integrated practice, leveraging multiple tools and synchronizing various techniques. However, implementing MBSE in small satellite mission such as CubeSat projects require disproportionate effort for the university developer and startups due to resource constraints. In fast paced NewSpace ecosystem where market demand and digital engineering advancement are more important than ever, MBSE must be applied in targeted, flexible and effective manner. Yet a comprehensiveness nature of MBSE may limit of agile attributes such as dynamic requirements and rapid changes, which are critical for small teams and emerging enterprises. To address this, we propose an objective-driven approach that align lifecycle stage with the core MBSE processes and activities. This approach encompasses five fundamental System Engineering activities integral to MBSE : Requirements Management, Model Development, Simulation and Analysis, Configuration Management, Collaboration and Communication. These phases serve as anchors for MBSE implementation, providing a structured a framework for defining model objective and ensuring a measurable, achievable, and quantifiable application. To maximize the utility of MBSE artifacts and align effort critical align with critical decision-making milestone, this work employs metric driven modeling approach. The incremental nature of Agile with digital thread of the MBSE artifacts, will be analyzed to establish metrics that can evaluate whether the digital engineering effort are aligned with targeted objective. This metrics include tracks system parameters, development timelines, design iterations, system complexity, number of identified inconsistencies, defects caught early, and reduction in rework cycles, -ultimately leading to savings or improved efficiency. This work will be deployed on CubeSat Reference Model (CSRM), to facilitate integration within existing workflows. The results aim to refine the framework into a versatile, scalable solution for future small satellite missions, supporting both technical and organizational strategies. This study underscores the potential of Agile MBSE as a transformative methodology for evolving in space industry.
