KOAH, zararlı partikül ya da gaz maruziyeti sonucu gelişen hava yolu veya alveolar anormalliklerin yol açtığı, kalıcı hava akımı kısıtlanması ile karakterize bir hastalıktır (GOLD, 2023). Hastalıkta çevresel faktörler ve genetik yatkınlık rol oynar. En önemli çevresel risk faktörü sigaradır (Sealock & Sharma, 2018).
