La producción de vino en la provincia Bética : estado de la cuestión en el Bajo Guadalquivir
Overview & Synopsis
Viticulture and wine production form one of the most important topics in the history of agriculture and commerce in the Roman province of Baetica. It is clear from literary sources that there was intense wine production, while its marketing is confirmed by the discovery of Baetican Haltern 70 amphoras across various parts of the western Mediterranean and especially via the Atlantic shipping route as far as Britain and the legions stationed on the Rhine. This paper focuses on a case-study of production in the south-west of the province, specifically in the wine region of Jerez, where archaeological survey and the study of the finds have allowed us to identify evidence for wine production such as amphoras and dolia, as well as other indicators such as a cella vinaria or ancient frames for the planting of vines.
