AbstractKey messageDuring an N-deposition simulation experiment, we showed that low to medium addition of N had beneficial effects on growth and photosynthetic rates ofFraxinus mandshuricaRupr. seedlings, while beyond a threshold of 80 kg N ha−1 year−1, performance plateaued and even declined at higher immissions.ContextTemperate forests are shifting from naturally N-limited toward N-saturated status with increasing N deposition. Yet, our knowledge regarding how seedling growth and physiology respond to excessive N input in temperate tree species remains very limited.AimsThe objective of this study was to examine growth and photosynthetic responses of F. mandshurica seedlings to a gradient of simulated N deposition.MethodsWe conducted a 4-year study to investigate growth and photosynthetic responses of F. mandshurica seedlings to a large gradient of simulated N deposition (0, 20, 40, 60, 80, 100, and 120 kg N ha−1 year−1). Biomass accumulation and allocation, photosynthetic gas exchange, expression, and activities of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco) in leaves were determined during the fourth growing season. Soil biochemical properties were measured to link them to the alterations in growth and photosynthetic traits across the N addition gradient.ResultsSeedling growth and photosynthesis were dependent upon the rates of N deposition. The maximum rate of carboxylation (Vc,max) and the net photosynthetic rate under saturating light (Asat) reached a maximum under 60 kg N ha−1 year−1. By contrast, high-level N inputs (100 and 120 kg N ha−1 year−1) resulted in suboptimal values in biomass and photosynthetic activity. Nitrogen deposition also modulated the activity and expression of Rubisco in leaves with a maximum around 80–100 kg N ha−1 year−1. Redundancy analysis (RDA) showed that the changes of seedling growth and photosynthesis along the gradient of N deposition were mostly attributed to the variations of soil pH and total N content.ConclusionOur data suggest that the threshold of N deposition is about 80 kg N ha−1 year−1 for F. mandshurica seedlings in this region. Excessive N input decreased performance on the seedling growth and photosynthesis.

In this paper we present an automatic, language-independent approach to extend an existing wordnet by recycling existing freely available bilingual resources, such as machine-readable dictionaries and on-line encyclopaedias. The approach is applied to Slovene and French. The words extracted from the bilingual resources are assigned one or several synset ids based on a classifier that relies on several features, including distributional similarity. Automatic and manual evaluation shows that the resulting extensions of sloWNet and WOLF are lexico-semantic repositories of high coverage as well as high quality.

As the European Union (EU) funded SmartSociety project aims to create a toolset for rapidly and systematically engineering collective intelligence systems to support daily living, it simultaneously wants to ameliorate the risks to individuals of participating in these types of hyper-connected digital systems. This paper reports on a panel session at the close at of the 2015 IFIP summer school that reflected upon a keynote speech covering SmartSociety concepts, technologies and ethical dilemmas. The panel session was conceived as a consultative exercise as part of the ongoing Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) approach embedded within the SmartSociety project. In this chapter we present an analysis of the panel session discussion, which touched on several key issues, including the relationships between technology and society, what we should expect from a ‘SmartSociety’, barriers and horizons in managing ethical issues, and brokerage as a methodological approach to weaving multiple perspectives into design.

AbstractKey messageSite form and site index have shown similar precision for estimating site quality in even-agedPinus radiataD. Don stands in north-western Spain. Additionally, SF presents the advantage that it does not require stand age information and can therefore be used in a wider set of situations in the forestry practice.ContextEstimation of site quality is essential for characterizing, monitoring and predicting forest resources. Site index (i.e. the dominant height of the stand at a reference age) is ordinarily used to estimate site quality; however, this index is only useful for even-aged stands of known age. By contrast, SF is age-independent as it uses the dominant height of the stand at a reference dominant diameter.AimsThe aim of this study was to compare the performance of SF and SI for site quality estimation in even-aged P. radiata stands.MethodsDynamic equations derived with the Generalized Algebraic Difference Approach (GADA) from the Hossfeld IV base model were fitted to predict site quality with both SI and SF. SF predictions were compared with SI regarding variability within the same plot and consistency in site quality predictions, using the observed maximum mean annual volume increment (MAI) as a direct measure of site quality.ResultsBoth approaches showed good performance in model fitting and provided similar goodness-of-fit statistics and variability in the predictions. However, SI performed slightly stronger when related to MAI.ConclusionSF performed adequately in estimating site quality for even-aged P. radiata stands, with results comparable to those obtained using traditional SI.

This paper presents a methodology to improve the reliability/robustness of a complex mechatronic system for passenger access, which is greatly stressed over its life cycle. The proposed methodology aims to weed out design problems during the development phase and to test the robustness of the passenger access system under operating conditions as close to the real service conditions as possible. The empirical study process is based on an experimental design series in order to cover a complex experimental domain in a reasonable number of tests for each experimental design. The exploratory aspect that stands in the experimental stage also stands in the data analysis stage thanks to a descriptive multivariate approach that reduces the initial information as less as possible. An application concerning the passenger access system for a train is presented. The experimental process is mainly based on the D-optimal design and is used with a 1:1 scale test bench. An example with five input factors is presented; the output data consist in a multidimensional signal containing open/close cycles that may be perturbed. The statistical analysis process starts by considering a scale windowing while beeping both time and multivariate aspects. The frequency values are then investigated using multiple correspondence analysis. Advantages and disadvantages of the proposed design of experiments and data analysis are discussed.

Mechanosorption refers to the phenomena observed when wood is subjected simultaneously to mechanical loading and sorption resulting from changing hygrothermal conditions. A model based on the concept of hygro-locks has been recently reformulated. The hygro-lock spring further extends under load when softened, but is blocked when hardened. This approach offers an alternative to the widespread mechano-sorptive dashpot where the absolute value of moisture change replaces time increment. It will be presented and analysed in comparison with other models, and suggestions for further work will be discussed.
