Urban farming is the cultivation of vegetables, fruit, herbs, and edible plants in the city. The City’s Farmers is a story about growing food in public space. Can we use the city’s parks, squares, power-line corridors, and roadside verges for cultivation? Whether you are a resident engaged in your city and neighborhood, a city planner, politician, or activist, this graphic novel will show you more about what can happen when cultivation is brought into public space—and what consequences it can have for our lives in the city.

Fictions of African Dictatorship examines the fictional representation of the African dictator and the performance of dictatorship across genres. The volume includes contributions focusing on literature, theatre and film, all of which examine the relationship between the fictional and the political. Among the questions the contributors ask: what are the implications of reading a novel for its historical content or accuracy? How does the dictator novel interrogate ideas of veracity? How is power performed and ridiculed? How do different writers reflect on questions of authority in the postcolony, and what are the effects on their stories and modes of narration? This volume untangles some of the intricate workings of dictatorial power in the postcolony, through twelve close readings of works of fiction.

The image of a giant sword melting stands at the structural and thematic heart of the Old English heroic poem Beowulf. This meticulously researched book investigates the nature and significance of this golden-hilted weapon and its likely relatives within Beowulf and beyond, drawing on the fields of Old English and Old Norse language and literature, liturgy, archaeology, astronomy, folklore and comparative mythology. In Part I, Pettit explores the complex of connotations surrounding this image (from icicles to candles and crosses) by examining a range of medieval sources, and argues that the giant sword may function as a visual motif in which pre-Christian Germanic concepts and prominent Christian symbols coalesce. In Part II, Pettit investigates the broader Germanic background to this image, especially in relation to the god Ing/Yngvi-Freyr, and explores the capacity of myths to recur and endure across time. Drawing on an eclectic range of narrative and linguistic evidence from Northern European texts, and on archaeological discoveries, Pettit suggests that the image of the giant sword, and the characters and events associated with it, may reflect an elemental struggle between the sun and the moon, articulated through an underlying myth about the theft and repossession of sunlight. The Waning Sword: Conversion Imagery and Celestial Myth in 'Beowulf' is a welcome contribution to the overlapping fields of Beowulf-scholarship, Old Norse-Icelandic literature and Germanic philology. Not only does it present a wealth of new readings that shed light on the craft of the Beowulf-poet and inform our understanding of the poem’s major episodes and themes; it further highlights the merits of adopting an interdisciplinary approach alongside a comparative vantage point. As such, The Waning Sword will be compelling reading for Beowulf-scholars and for a wider audience of medievalists.

The third book in Strabo’s Geography describes Iberia from the viewpoint of a Greek citizen living in Rome during the rules of Augustus and Tiberius, both Roman emperors in Strabo’s lifetime. Having himself witnessed the expansion of the Roman Empire to the western edge of Europe, the geographer from Amaseia highlights the importance attributed to the civilizing and appeasing role exercised by Rome in the westernmost region of the known world. This present edition contains the translation of the Greek text complemented by explanatory footnotes as well as an introduction that includes elements of general interest about the author and his work, a brief outline of the most influential sources in the geographer’s writings and the structure of book three of his Geography. In addition the current publication also features an index of geographical terms and another with ancient sources, a map illustrating the contours of the regions referenced by Strabo and a detailed bibliography at the end.

The Australian “Better Strangers” project has begun exploring the potential of gamified learning scenarios to enrich teacher professional development and student learning at high school and university. In May 2016, Shakeserendipity became the subject of an unsolicited newspaper review by 16-year-old South Australian student Dylan Carpinelli. Australian high school teacher Catherine Hicks shared the Macbeth Shakespeed module with her Year 12 class in North Queensland as part of a larger learning activity. Students were to write a memoir from the perspective of a minor character in Macbeth and Hicks used Shakespeed “as an activity to help them brainstorm the themes and ideas and create modern interpretations of the play.” In the Macbeth Shakespeed game the Wild Card is a YouTube audio clip of the song “Metaphor” by Swedish alternative metal band In Flames. The song’s persona reflects on the pain, sickness, and entrapment of his desire.

1. This chapter argues that our self-knowledge is often mediated by our affective self-knowledge. In other words, we often know about ourselves by knowing our own emotions. More precisely, what Cassam has called “substantial self-knowledge” (SSK), such as self-knowledge of one's character, one's values, or one's aptitudes, is mediated by affective forecasting, which is the process of predicting one's emotional responses to possible situations. For instance, a person comes to know that she is courageous by predicting her own emotional reactions to possible risks and dangers. This hypothesis explains why attaining substantive self-knowledge tends to be difficult. Attaining substantive self-knowledge is difficult because, first, SSK is mediated by affective forecasting and, second, we tend to be wrong about predicting the intensity and duration of our own emotional reactions. As a result, we can identify what is common to central cases of SSK: such cases require knowledge about complex dispositions whose manifestations involve affective responses that one is not sufficiently familiar with. One thus needs to resort to the highly fallible method of affective forecasting.

This reprint of the Special Issue “Advances in Developmental Biology in Tree Fruit and Nut Crops” brings together 16 diverse studies that illuminate how genetic, hormonal, and environmental factors shape the growth and productivity of key tree fruit and nut species. Several articles explore hormone-mediated processes, such as the role of exogenous abscisic acid in anthocyanin biosynthesis in blueberry leaves, the effects of gibberellic acid on Shine Muscat grapes, and the influence of endogenous hormones on seed hardness in pomegranate. Other contributions focus on molecular and genomic insights, including the characterization of the PpEXPs family in peach for fruit texture development, identification of laccase genes in grapevine under pathogen stress, and genome-wide analyses of the PYR/PYL/RCAR gene family in pomegranates. Germplasm diversity and phylogenetic relationships also feature prominently, highlighted by research on Caribbean breadfruit, almond S-RNase genotypes, and chloroplast genome profiling of “Qixiadaxiangshui” pear. Meanwhile, integrated transcriptomic and metabolomic approaches uncover stress responses in strawberry and blueberry, and shed light on photoprotective mechanisms in Torreya grandis. Further articles address flower-to-fruit ratios in olives, selective fruitlet retention in avocados, and lipoxygenase gene expression in sweet cherries. Together, these 16 papers offer a comprehensive perspective on the developmental biology driving innovations in tree fruit and nut crops.
