This book is open access under a CC BY 4.0 license. This book describes the history, structure and institutions of open and distance education in six countries: China, India, Russia, Turkey, South Africa and South Korea. It describes how open and distance education is evolving in a digital age to reflect the needs and circumstances of the national higher education systems in these countries. It also explores the similarities and differences between how their open and distance higher education systems are managed and structured. This book is the second in a series, following Open and Distance Education in Australia, Europe and the Americas (Springer 2018). Both books compare and draw conclusions about the nature of open and distance education in the context of various national higher education systems. Współczesne oblicze urbanistyki, które ma swoje źródła w krytyce zjawisk obserwowanych w miastach od przełomu lat 50. i 60. XX wieku, jest niejednorodne. W praktyce zawodowej oraz w dyskusjach akademickich zazębiają lub ścierają się ze sobą różne podejścia do projektowania urbanistycznego. W konsekwencji, struktury przestrzenne miast są w tym samym czasie uzupełniane realizacjami urbanistycznymi wychodzącymi z nurtów o różnych założeniach i metodykach. Wydaje się jednak, że w literaturze przedmiotu brakuje stosownego przeglądu i klasyfikacji tych nurtów. Celem rozdziału jest zatem przedstawienie, porównanie i sklasyfikowanie wybranych nurtów urbanistyki, które wyłoniły się i zostały upowszechnione w ostatnich dekadach po obu stronach Północnego Atlantyku. Uwaga skierowana jest w szczególności na nowy urbanizm, urbanizm krajobrazowy oraz urbanizm „zrób to sam”. Rozdział wyjaśnia źródła, które stały za zarysowaniem się wskazanych nurtów. Przedstawia ich najważniejsze założenia, a także ilustruje je przykładami zrealizowanych projektów urbanistycznych. Przeprowadzona analiza doprowadziła do identyfikacji dwóch kluczowych osi rozgraniczających nurty urbanistyki współczesnej pod względem doktrynalnym i metodycznym. Druga oś to TAKTYKA vs STRATEGIA, która pozwala odróżnić drobne, oddolne interwencje urbanistyczne od wielkich inwestycji realizowanych odgórnie. Rozdział kończy się wskazaniem, iż przyszłe oblicze urbanistyki będzie zmierzało w kierunku synkretycznego łączenia założeń i metod różnych nurtów.

Ethnologues et sociologues nous montrent à travers ces exemples, parfois cocasses, les réseaux nécessaires à l’adaptation ou à la réactivation de ces objets. Ces « milieux techniques favorables » incluent ces passeurs et traducteurs que sont les inventeurs, les artistes, les élus, les aménageurs, les conservateurs et tous ceux auxquels la société confie le rôle de codifier, de promouvoir, de contrôler et d’authentifier processus et produits. Pour nous faire entrer de plain pied dans ces singulières histoires contemporaines, les chercheurs ont dû sortir de leurs rassurantes insularités disciplinaires et se confronter à cet apparent paradoxe de nos sociétés qui, en un même mouvement, revendiquent la tradition et promeuvent l’innovation. Le cinéma n'a jamais été aussi bouleversé dans ses fondements que depuis l'avènement et le développement du numérique. À l'ère de cette redéfinition profonde se fait jour, depuis plusieurs années déjà, une nouvelle manière de penser les images cinématographiques à travers la pratique désormais connue de la capture de mouvement. Également rencontrée – et plus connue – sous les noms de motion capture ou de performance capture, cette technologie qu'Avatar de James Cameron a contribué à rendre célèbre à la fin des années 2000 tend à fondamentalement transformer la manière de concevoir un film, en termes pratiques comme de réception. On connaît son principe, consistant à capter le mouvement réel d'un corps afin de le transposer au cœur d'un univers numérique, véritable hybridation entre le cinéma en prises de vues réelles et le cinéma d'animation par ordinateur. Mais plus encore, la capture de mouvement permet de s'interroger en profondeur sur l'identité et la nature même du cinéma et sur l'une de ses orientations possibles à l'âge du numérique. Les études qui composent cet ouvrage se proposent d'ouvrir un champ d'investigation encore relativement peu exploré afin de cerner au mieux cette nouvelle manière de faire du cinéma. Mais annoncer l'avenir de ce dernier ne peut s'envisager sans un retour préalable à ses racines, celles-là même où la capture de mouvement paraît puiser ses propres origines. D'Étienne-Jules Marey à Robert Zemeckis, cet ouvrage explore donc le spectre historique et théorique de la capture de mouvement, dont les diverses applications, non seulement au cinéma mais également dans les domaines voisins que sont les arts scéniques et le jeu vidéo, proposent pour chacune une manière singulière de modeler le mouvement, et donc, d'esthétiser l'invisible.

The article shows constitutive features of the structural pattern of the lexeme ‘patent’, understood as ‘statutes, legislative acts’ as used in the 18th and the 19th-century Polish. The following nominalizing/verbalizing features are defined as canonical for this structural pattern: 1) sender, 2) recipient, 3) justification for a legal act, 4) content of the regulation, 5) methods of making the law public, 6) spatio-temporal location, 7) locum sigillum and the sender’s signature. Among the secondary features, one can find the following: 1) meta-legal comments, 2) waivers, 3) recitals, 4) law legitimation, 5) indicating the vacatio legis period.

Humans are not unique in using tools. But human tool use differs from that known to occur in nonhumans in being very frequent, spontaneous, and diversified. So a fundamental issue is, what are the cognitive and neural bases of human tool use? This Research Topic of Frontiers provides a venue for leading researchers in the field of tool use to present original research papers, integrative reviews or theoretical articles that further our understanding of this topic. From time immemorial, humans have been making deals, consuming goods, cultivating interests, thereby manifesting specific forms of life. Now, these forms of life solidify automatically by transforming into data. Webfare, a form of digital welfare, seeks to initiate a Copernican revolution that places need instead of merit at the center of society. In 21st-century welfare, consumption and production will be considered as the two faces of the same reality. The possibility to create new value is precisely what sets Webfare apart from traditional welfare: it recognizes the new value created by the Web, and aims to use it for everyone's well-being.

This open access book provides an enriched understanding of historical, collective, cultural, and identity-related trauma, emphasising the social and political location of human subjects. It therefore presents a socio-ecological perspective on trauma, rather than viewing displaced individuals as traumatised “passive victims”. The vastness of the phenomenon of trauma among displaced populations has led it to become a critical and timely area of inquiry, and this book is an important addition to the literature. It gives an overview of theoretical frameworks related to trauma and migration—exploring factors of risk and resilience, prevalence rates of PTSD, and conceptualisations of trauma beyond psychiatric diagnoses; conceptualises experiences of trauma from a sociocultural perspective (including collective trauma, collective aspirations, and collective resilience); and provides applications for professionals working with displaced populations in complex institutional, legal, and humanitarian settings. It includes case studies based on the author’s own 10-year experience working in emergency contexts with displaced populations in 11 countries across the world. This book presents unique data collected by the author herself, including interviews with survivors of ISIS attacks, with an asylum seeker in Switzerland who set himself alight in protest against asylum procedures, and women from the Murle tribe affected by the conflict in South Sudan who experienced an episode of mass fainting spells. This is an important resource for academics and professionals working in the field of trauma studies and with traumatised groups and individuals.

En droit français, le terme infanticide désigne le meurtre commis sur un enfant dans les trois jours suivant sa naissance, qui correspondent au délai légal de sa déclaration à l’état civil. C’est dire que ce crime est avant tout celui de l’illégitimité et qu’il frappe particulièrement les enfants dont la naissance doit demeurer clandestine. Entre 1824 et 1863, le législateur s’efforçant de l’adapter à l’état d’esprit des jurés qui répugnent à infliger la mort aux mères coupables, remanie par trois fois la pénalité de l’infanticide. Au cours de la même période, près de 600 affaires ont été portées devant les tribunaux bretons. La Bretagne, réputée pour sa ferveur religieuse et considérée par les ethnologues comme un véritable conservatoire des traditions, connaît un taux d’infanticide légèrement supérieur à la moyenne nationale. Doit-on y voir le signe de l’intolérance des populations rurales – qui fournissent l’essentiel des accusées – à l’égard des grossesses illégitimes ou bien, au contraire, un indice de l’affaiblissement des structures traditionnelles d’encadrement des conduites, autorisant une forme de vagabondage sexuel ? Les sources judiciaires permettent de reconstituer une grande partie des crimes. Elles éclairent la personnalité des femmes mises en accusation, leur vie quotidienne, leurs amours, le regard que portent sur elles les communautés villageoises. La pesanteur du contrôle exercé sur les femmes seules, la sévérité avec laquelle sont traitées les déviances, mettent en lumière la place qu’occupe la réputation dans le système de valeurs des ruraux et démontrent que l’infanticide est profondément arrimé à la problématique de l’honneur et de son envers, la honte.

The “Railways” Working Group of the Italian Road Infrastructures Society (S.I.I.V.) has produced this volume, which presents an in-depth survey conducted among SIIV members on railway infrastructure with regard to teaching, research, and the extensive regulatory framework of interest. The aim is to provide an updated overview of the educational and scientific activities that characterize this disciplinary field. This initiative is part of a broader process of shared reflection, designed to highlight the contribution that the Italian academic community in sector CEAR-03/A offers, in terms of knowledge and methodologies, to the development of railways. The volume is conceived as both a source of knowledge and a tool for dialogue, useful not only for documenting the current state of the discipline but also for guiding future research and teaching activities, particularly at institutions where courses in “Railway Infrastructure” are not yet active. With this work, the Group intends to contribute to the consolidation of a shared culture in the field of railway infrastructure, in the conviction that only through an integrated and interdisciplinary approach will it be possible to effectively address the challenges posed by technological innovation and the transition towards more sustainable mobility.
