The lack of knowledge about sedimentation processes taking place in a watershed or a waterbody hinders practical progress in addressing problem-solving. To assist the reader in putting sediment quantity and quality issues into perspective, sedimentation engineering features the most state-of-the-art contributions from a number of researchers working in the fields of water resources and soil erosion. The book contains 10 chapters selected among a great number of submitted manuscripts. The main topics are sedimentation processes in marshes, harbor estuaries, gulf, hydraulic turbine, and volcanic area. Sediment contamination and few other topics are included as well. The case studies cover a sequence for integrated solutions where watershed management and sedimentation engineering are not decoupled. This book on sedimentation engineering is designed for researchers and professionals and for course use in environmental science.

Over the past twenty-five years, design practice has expanded from making objects to shaping experiences that unfold in-time. As this expansion has accelerated, designers have gained powerful new tools – but often without a shared language for shaping embodied experience. Somaesthetic Design: The Experiencing Body and the Dynamics of Time responds by focusing on the experiencing body as a key source of design knowledge. Drawing from embodied practices and performance traditions, Michael Arnold Mages and Stephen Neely give designers a shared vocabulary and framework for understanding, crafting, and evaluating lived experience as it is felt and sustained in time.

Mens sana in corpore sano (a healthy mind in a healthy body) is a Latin phrase taken from Giovenale (Satire, X, 356) that remains relevant and is supported by today’s data regarding genetics and nutrition, and their contribution to mental health. The purpose of this Special Issue on “Nutrition and Fitness: Mental Health” is to provide an update on the latest evidence regarding the association between nutrition, physical activity (and inactivity) and physical fitness, and the mental health of children, adolescents, and adults. Particularly, papers (reviews and clinical or experimental studies) dealing with the association between nutrition, physical fitness, and mental health both in general and with regard to specific mental disorders, and nutrients and physical activity as agents for prevention, treatment, or augmentation of treatment for mental disorders, will be included.

Kucharska-Dreiss starts her paper with a brief discussion of the origin, the role and the form of books of friendship (known also as “alba amicorum”). She also presents a general image of the owners of books of friendship, of the authors of inscriptions and of the structure of inscriptions themselves. She closes the introductory part of the paper with the conclusion that a book of friendship is studied by many disciplines. In the next part of her paper Kucharska-Dreiss discusses in more detail the content of Lexikon der Stammbuchsprüche: Stechow’s Stammbuchsprüche-Schlüssel (S.S.S.S.) (Stechow 1996) on which her study is based. The main part of the study (the first of a series of several planned) is devoted to preliminary remarks on the initialisms to be found in books of friendship (i.e. aphorisms, quotations, etc. written down as sequences of initials). The author’s observations concern the length and form of initialisms, multiple solutions of the same initialism (in the same or different sources, in one or several languages, with similar or slightly different content), the cited works (with the Bible as a primary source of quotations) and authors (ancient thinkers, writers and poets were most often cited). Closing her paper, the author informs the reader which (detailed) issues will be explored in further studies belonging to this series of articles.

Exploited for requirements of defence, navigation, transport, irrigation, and the powering of mills, water has progressively diminished in importance to the extent that the relations between the city, the territory and the water systems have now greatly deteriorated. This book proposes to retrace the nature of the relations between water and the urban landscape, interpreting the shifting of the relations through images. It also analyses the use of water in contemporary landscape design, identifying the conceptual and compositional tools proper to landscape design which can inform and guide future planning.

Experts from academia and industry discuss how to create a new, more effective translational neuroscience drawing on novel technology and recent discoveries. Today, translational neuroscience faces significant challenges. Available therapies to treat brain and nervous system disorders are extremely limited and dated, and further development has effectively ceased. Disinvestment by the private sector occurred just as promising new technologies in genomics, stem cell biology, and neuroscience emerged to offer new possibilities. In this volume, experts from both academia and industry discuss how novel technologies and reworked translation concepts can create a more effective translational neuroscience. The contributors consider such topics as using genomics and neuroscience for better diagnostics and biomarker identification; new approaches to disease based on stem cell technology and more careful use of animal models; and greater attention to human biology and what it will take to make new therapies available for clinical use. They conclude with a conceptual roadmap for an effective and credible translational neuroscience—one informed by a disease-focused knowledge base and clinical experience.

PAUL GILSON (1865-1942), born and raised in Brussels, grew into a valued artist during the fin de siècle. He was and is known as an erudite composer, orchestrator, theoretician, critic, musicographer and educator. A prestigious Prix de Rome (1889) and his symphonic work La Mer (1892) made him known far beyond the national borders. Because of his remarkable commitment to wind music, and that of amateur orchestras in particular, we still remember Gilson today as the Father of Belgian wind music. Gilson's extremely versatile artistry resonated with numerous international trends. He closely followed current musical life at home and abroad and reported extensively in newspapers, magazines and radio broadcasts. At the conservatories of Brussels and Antwerp and as a private teacher, he managed to stimulate and sustainably influence a new generation of composers and musicians. That pedagogical passion also challenged Gilson to bundle his sharp insights into theoretical tracts. All of these facets of Gilson's life and work are the focus of this book, with a particular focus on his national and international importance. From his life to his correspondence with Russians, from his elaborate theories to his music for wind orchestras, opera music and compositions for horn and saxophone: the authors of this volume provide an in-depth and extensive insight into the character of Paul Gilson.

Indian traces in Korean Culture examines the enduring cross-cultural discourse between India and Korea over the centuries, emphasizing the transformative power of cultural exchange beyond geographical and temporal constraints. The book analyses how symbols transcend sensory realms and embody spiritual content and suggests that Indian associations in Korean culture reflect a hybridized nature, seamlessly blending cultural elements. The author presents various facets of the cultural exchange between India and Korea, covering Princess Hŏ Hwang-ok's legendary Indian origins shaping Korean identity, Ilyŏn's strategic documentation of Buddhism's transmission, the influence of Indian figures such as Gandhi and Tagore, an exploration of literature from ancient Buddhist verse to modern poets like Kim Yang-shik and Shiva Ryu, and a study of cultural exchange in K-pop. Facilitating a possible alternative to Huntington’s theory of the clash of civilisations, this book provides evidence that the multifaceted encounters between cultures are a historical process that co-shapes civilisational change on a global scale. The first monograph solely dedicated to India-Korea cultural connection from antiquity to the present, this book offers a paradigm shift, inviting readers to explore fresh insights and reshape their understanding of cultural exchanges. It will be of interest to researchers in intercultural communication, Cultural Studies, Cultural History and Asian Studies, in particular Korea and India.
