In this collection of interdisciplinary papers, for the first time well-known scholars of Ancient Near Eastern Studies discuss Babylon from the point of view of the ""culture of knowledge"". The volume is the result of a conference that took place on the occasion of the exhibition Babylon ? Truth and Myth in Berlin. For the contemporary cultures of the Ancient World, Babylon was the epitome of learned scholarship. Yet in the processes of transformation of Late and post-Antiquity, to the same extent to which this culture of knowledge was forgotten after the collapse of the old oriental empires, Babylon became symbolic for the occult, for magic and esoteric knowledge. As the first joint pilot project by Topoi and the publisher De Gruyter for the simultaneous publication in print and open access, this volume will, on publication, also be available via www.reference-global.de as an eBook ""open access"".; Eva Cancik-Kirschbaum, Freie Universit

Dissertation for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Dr. phil.) at the Faculty of Education at Bielefeld University Nowadays, hardly any area of modern society is working without Internet-based technologies. The basis of such technologies is an increasingly complex and expanding Internet infrastructure, which is to be constantly maintained and expanded in accordance with growing requirements. The ever-increasing interest in Internet-based information and communication technologies led to numerous studies dealing with the redesign and deployment of Internet technologies or investigating their impact. However, the redesign of existing information technology systems -in the sense of rebuilding the existing Internet infrastructure- has so far been almost completely disregarded. The reconstruction of the Internet infrastructure is extraordinarily complex. Therefore, it requires very special attention, since it has to be carried out in a continuously growing information technology infrastructure while taking into account the interoperability with already existing technologies. This thesis therefore aims to concentrate on and fill this existing research gap to some extent by examining the dynamics involved in the restructuring of the existing Internet infrastructure and to contribute to the further development of infrastructure research. This is carried out using the analysis of the Internet Protocol as an example; from the introduction of TCP/IP to the Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6), which is currently being introduced. Using a systematic literature review on the reconstruction of Internet infrastructure research, the introduction process is reconstructed in historical comparative detail through a method triangulation of document analyses and interviews. This is done following the insights of the infrastructure theory (GTS) (c.f. Mayntz 1988; Mayntz und Hughes 1988; Braun und Joerges 1994; Hughes 1983; 1987; Joerges 1988; 1996) and Actor-Network-Theory (ANT) (c.f. Callon und Latour 2006a [1981]; Callon 2006b; 2006a [1986]; Latour 1987; Law 2006 [1992]) and based on the research logic as well as the methodologies of Grounded Theory (GTM) (c.f. Glaser und Strauss 1967; Strauss und Corbin 1996; 1990). The participating actors are clustered into social actors, factual elements, and temporal-spatial constellations, and their effects within the process is to be analyzed. Furthermore, phases in the development and introduction process are compared historically, and the strategies used for the development and introduction of infrastructure technologies in the current system are elaborated. This thesis shows a significant change in the field of social, factual, and temporal-spatial actor constellations, which is not exclusively historically determined but can be traced back to the peculiarities of the reconstruction of increasingly complex existing infrastructure systems. On the one hand, it is shown which technical, social, and temporal-spatial constellations of actors are driving the development and implementation process and how the increasing complexity of technical structures, the necessity of technical interoperability and the resulting increasing standardization have an influence. On the other hand, it is shown in how far strategies for development and introduction have changed, for example, due to changing temporal-spatial structures. Using the example of the investigation of the development and introduction of TCP/IP up to IPv6, the study thereby elaborates on three central development phases for the transformation of the Internet infrastructure: the early innovation phase, the process phase, and the migration phase. While in the early development phase the developers were also the users of the technology and the system was switched off for conversion, nowadays more and more Internet standards ensure operability in the process phase using already existing technologies. Furthermore, during migration phase, test environments are set up to test technical innovations, and a step-by-step implementation is pursued with the help of transitional solutions. Finally, the work highlights that development and adaptation are reflexive, increasingly regulated due to the complexity of the Internet (social and technical complexity), and, because of the network’s expansion, globally distributed. Finally, in this context, the shift away from social, factual, and temporal-spatial homogeneity in the development and introduction of Internet infrastructure technologies to social, factual, and temporal-spatial heterogeneity can be observed. These changes are by no means to be seen in an isolated way. On the contrary, they influence their environment to such an extent that they generate unintended side effects forming the basis for further developments.

Trauma presents as a negative experience or situation of an individual in which coping mechanisms do not always work perfectly. This leads to the appearance of disturbing behavior, thinking, or developing disorders in the area of mental illnesses. Psychological trauma is related to chronic and repetitive experiences and the term and situation that refer to it must be consider objectively because it is up to each survivor to determine if it is traumatic. Future studies in the area of psychological trauma need to be conducted with the aim of defining anatomical correlates of stress and its underlying pathophysiological mechanisms.

The Roman Republic of 1849 is one of the most exciting moment of the heroic season of the Italian Risorgimento, a short adventure in which the contemporaries recognized the opportunity to realize ideals of freedom, tolerance and democracy. This research aims to analyses the role played by religion in the political and social experiment that started in Rome after the pope’s escape, when it was necessary to redefine relations between civil and religious authorities, as well as the role of religion itself in society: a task not at all easy if applied to a State reality, where political and religious powers had been superimposed for centuries, but that will set an inescapable precedent for the subsequent attempts to build a secular State.

This chapter outlines the main concepts examined and defined by the French jurist Alain Supiot, and traces the argumentative trajectories of his proposals for reflection and action, which - as the document seeks to emphasize - transcend the boundaries of law and represent real prospects for social change, with the aim of guaranteeing and protecting citizenship rights beyond employment. In summary, after a brief biographical introduction (1), the essay will discuss the transformations of work, intertwined with the financialization of the economy and the process of globalization, and the protection of work beyond employment (2); the new rights and concept of “mondialisation” as a barrier to the total market (3); the meaning of work and social justice according to the author (4).

Based on the 1986 Reed Lectures, Power of the Press illustrates the important role that the Gospel Advocate, the Christian Standard, and the Christian-Evangelist played in shaping the identity of all three streams of the Stone-Campbell Movement in the nineteenth and early twentieth century. The essays also offer explanations as to why publishing offered such remarkable influence in this period.
