Research in the field of assessment has long emphasized the need to involve students as co-responsible in evaluative processes, also in relation to the opportunity to promote self-regulation skills in learning, essential for learning that can continuously renew and adapt to different circumstances and moments in life. The essay outlines a research path with a dual purpose: addressing the need for conceptual clarity in assessment approaches, especially in the realm of so-called “formative” assessment, to ensure consistency in applications and measurements in educational research; examining the gap between the theory of assessment and its application in school classrooms.

Radical ideologies may manifest differently at first, but they do follow a similar logic: truth claims, promises of salvation and a unifying common enemy. In Yemen's transition process today, the secessionist movement Al-Hirak has summoned the spirit of South Yemen, the only Marxist state in Arabia. This book meticulously describes how East Germany supported the implantation of this alien ideology in Yemen through its policy of #on("i")#"Socialist state- and nation-building"#off("i")#. In the same breath, the analysis captures the GDR's activities in the Middle East and their vital role in Moscow's Cold War strategy. Last but least, the study provides one of the few compact overviews of East German foreign policy in the English language of today.

Almost one hundred presentations from the thirty-third annual Charleston Library Conference (held November 6–9, 2013) are included in this annual proceedings volume. Major themes of the meeting included open access publishing, demand-driven acquisition, the future of university presses, and data-driven decision making. While the Charleston meeting remains a core one for acquisitions librarians in dialog with publishers and vendors, the breadth of coverage of this volume reflects the fact that this conference is now one of the major venues for leaders in the publishing and library communities to shape strategy and prepare for the future. At least 1,500 delegates attended the 2013 meeting, ranging from the staff of small public library systems to the CEOs of major corporations. This fully indexed, copyedited volume provides a rich source for the latest evidence-based research and lessons from practice in a range of information science fields. The contributors are leaders in the library, publishing, and vendor communities.

In the last few decades, Japanese popular culture productions have been consolidated as one of the most influential and profitable global industries. As a creative industry, Japanese Media-Mixes generate multimillion-dollar revenues, being a product of international synergies and the natural appeal of the characters and stories. The transnationalization of investment capital, diversification of themes and (sub)genres, underlying threat in the proliferation of illegal audiences, development of internet streaming technologies, and other new transformations in media-mix-based production models make the study of these products even more relevant today. In this way, manga (Japanese comics), anime (Japanese animation), and video games are not necessarily products designed for the national market. More than ever, it is necessary to reconcile national and transnational positions for the study of this cultural production. The present volume includes contributions aligned to the analysis of Japanese popular culture flow from many perspectives (cultural studies, film, comic studies, sociology, etc.), although we have emphasized the relationships between manga, anime, and international audiences. The selected works include the following topics:• Studies on audiences—national and transnational case studies;• Fandom production and Otaku culture;• Cross-media and transmedia perspectives;• Theoretical perspectives on manga, anime, and media-mixes.

This open access book provides the first explicit case study for an application of the method of reflective equilibrium (RE), using it to develop and defend a precautionary principle. It thereby makes an important and original contribution to questions of philosophical method and methodology. The book shows step-by-step how RE is applied, and develops a methodological framework which will be useful for everyone who wishes to use reflective equilibrium. With respect to precautionary principles, the book demonstrates how a rights-based precautionary principle can be constructed and defended. The case study succeeds in demonstrating that RE can be successfully applied and puts real constraints on the justification process. This is all the more remarkable as the case study was designed as an open-ended process, without presupposing any specific results. This book will be highly relevant both to people interested in philosophical methodology and epistemology, as well as to researchers who are interested in using philosophical methods and tools and applying them to practical problems.

Exploring multilingualism as a complex, context-related, societal and individual phenomenon, this book centres around perspectives on how multiple languages are made (in)visible within educational settings in the Global North. The authors of each chapter compare and contrast findings across geographical contexts with the goal of understanding the facets of multilingualism that, on the one hand, conform across contexts, and on the other, diverge context-specifically. The chapters range from contributions with a focus on national/state planning for the development of sustainable multilingual and intercultural educational policies, to chapters that deal with multilingual practices and identities of students and student teachers as well as the consequences for language practices, strategies and policies in diversifying societies. This cross-contextual, comparative and interdisciplinary exploration of multilingualism will be of great interest to researchers, administrators, practitioners and students within the fields of multilingual education, sociolinguistics, youth culture and identity studies. The book is open access under a CC BY NC ND licence.

The monograph addresses selected social, economic and environmental aspects of the concept of sustainable development in the TFL sector. It is part of the trend of considering how to satisfy the needs of the present generation in such a way as not to limit the possibilities of satisfying those needs by future generations. The publication consists of nine chapters and a supplement. The individual chapters present solutions aimed at sustainable development initiated and put into practice by specific companies related to the TSL industry, as well as public institutions. There are also cross-sectional analyses of the entire TFL sector. The research results presented by the individual authors allow for the conclusion that due to the strategic importance of the TFL sector in the economy, there is an urgent need to involve decision-makers from this sector in initiatives aimed at sustainable development. However, the transformation of TFL sector entities towards sustainability is impossible without the appropriate multidimensional involvement of their employees in this process. Therefore, what follows from the presented considerations, apart from the implementation of internal pro-environmental regulations or technical and technological solutions, it becomes important to pay attention to the appropriate management of human capital in individual organisations from the TFL sector.
