In this book, conceived and written for the general reader as well as the specialist, Robert Edelman uses a case study of peasant behavior during a particular revolutionary situation to make an important contribution to one of the major debates in contemporary peasant studies. Edelman's subject is the peasantry of the right-bank Ukraine, and he uses local and regional archives seldom available to Western scholars to give a detailed picture of the ways in which the inhabitants of one of Russia’s most advanced agrarian regions expressed their discontent during the years 1905–1907. By the 1890s, the landlords of Russia’s Southwest had organized a highly successful capitalist form of agriculture, and Edelman demonstrates that their peasants responded to these dramatic economic changes by adopting many of the forms of political and social behavior generally associated with urban proletarians. ; In this book, conceived and written for the general reader as well as the specialist, Robert Edelman uses a case study of peasant behavior during a particular revolutionary situation to make an important contribution to one of the major debates in contemporary peasant studies. Is it really necessary to explain what is new in literary history by breaking with established genre traditions? Do norm-breaking innovations in literature and the normative structure of a literary genre necessarily form opposites? What role do reference texts play in both the constitution of a literary genre and its overcoming? This volume, which emerged from the work of the research group 2305 ‘Discursivizations of the New’ and a conference organized by it, aims to question traditional linear narratives in literary historiography and to show in exemplary case studies how genres were transformed through complex resumption and modification of the previous tradition. The contributions in this volume, whose temporal horizon extends from antiquity to the early 19th century, also document how the often absolute time categories ‘old’ and ‘new’ in the definition of a genre must always be seen as relational and, precisely in their mutual interrelationship, make a decisive contribution to the genesis of genres.

In this study the technical and economic feasibility of a 380 kV, 5 kA resistive type superconducting fault current limiter was investigated. Conceptual designs were developed with superconducting tapes cooled by liquid nitrogen and arranged in bifilar coils. A cryostat was designed using FEM simulations taking into account the non-linear voltage distribution. For the complete system including current limiting reactors and cooling system, the investment and operation costs were calculated.

The urban and natural landscape relations are temporal, spatial, and perceptive phenomena complemented by providing functions and holistic principles that arise from the spatial planning approach. The research aims to investigate how spatial planning guides the changeability process of landscape relations in the Adriatic cities of Ancona and Rijeka settled between two strong natural elements of the sea and the mountains. The research interconnects the Heritage Urbanism approach and the Urbanscape Emanation concept in establishing identity factors, evaluation criteria, and enhancement models.

It is just over forty years since the start of the excavations of the Ascott-under-Wychwood long barrow (1965-69) under the direction of Don Benson. The excavations belonged to the latter part of a great period of barrow digging in southern Britain, which was ending just as, by striking contrast, intensified investigation and fieldwork at causewayed enclosures were beginning. Although a long gap has passed since the excavations took place, they have nonetheless produced a rich and important set of results, and the analysis has been enhanced by more recent techniques. The site now joins Burn Ground and Hazleton North as one of only three Cotswold long barrows or cairns to have been more or less fully excavated. The authors of this report not only document the finds and research, but also address wider questions of how the early Neolithic inhabitants viewed their society through the barrow, and how the development of the site reflected memory and interaction with a changing world.

The essay analyses Pasolini's translation of the Orestea for performances in the Syracuse theatre in 1960. Word by word and through constant comparison with the texts Pasolini used (mainly Paul Mazon's edition), the linguistic processes through which Aeschylus' language is broken down and then recomposed in Pasolini's poetic language are recorded, thus generating continuous semantic shifts between the original and the new text. By considering the variations of meaning in an organic way and relating them to each other, the interpretation of the modern poet emerges clearly and powerfully.

The 43rd UID conference, held in Genova, takes up the theme of ‘Dialogues’ as practice and debate on many fundamental topics in our social life, especially in these complex and not yet resolved times. The city of Genova offers the opportunity to ponder on the value of comparison and on the possibilities for the community, naturally focused on the aspects that concern us, as professors, researchers, disseminators of knowledge, or on all the possibile meanings of the discipline of representation and its dialogue with ‘others’, which we have broadly catalogued in three macro areas: History, Semiotics, Science / Technology. Therefore, “dialogue” as a profitable exchange based on a common language, without which it is impossible to comprehend and understand one another; and the graphic sign that connotes the conference is the precise transcription of this concept: the title ‘translated’ into signs, derived from the visual alphabet designed for the visual identity of the UID since 2017. There are many topics which refer to three macro sessions: - Witnessing (signs and history) - Communicating (signs and semiotics) - Experimenting (signs and sciences) Thanks to the different points of view, an exceptional resource of our disciplinary area, we want to try to outline the prevailing theoretical-operational synergies, the collaborative lines of an instrumental nature, the recent updates of the repertoires of images that attest and nourish the relations among representation, history, semiotics, sciences.

The book comprises studies of twenty-four texts of Slavic-ecclesiastical production composed to recount the lives and celebrate the memory of eleven saints of the Russian Orthodox church who lived between the tenth and the seventeenth centuries: Ol'ga of Kiev (†969), Evfrosinija of Polock (†1173), Fevronija of Murom (†1228), Evfrosinija of Suzdal' (†1250), Anna of Kašin (XIII-XIV sec.), Sof'ja of Tver (XIII-XIV sec.), Vassa of Nižnij Novgorod (†1378), Julianija of Vjaz'ma (†1406), Evdokija of Moscow (†1407), Sof'ja of Suzdal' (†1542) and Julianija of Lazar'evo (†1604). Leaving to the historians the task of establishing the reliability of the hagiographic accounts handed down by the sources, the author intends to highlight the cultural influence of the texts in question. The analysis of the stylistic features, of the motifs and the bibliographical-liturgical citations contained in them, brings to light a characteristic profile of the female hagiography, identifying the image of the 'bride of Christ' as the model of sanctity for women. This interpretative key represents an initial approach to issues that have been addressed to date only in a superficial and sporadic manner as regards the East Slavic tradition, although they have begun to receive their due attention in the Latin and Byzantine sphere.
