Window functions—otherwise known as weighting functions, tapering functions, or apodization functions—are mathematical functions that are zero-valued outside the chosen interval. They are well established as a vital part of digital signal processing. Window Functions and their Applications in Signal Processing presents an exhaustive and detailed account of window functions and their applications in signal processing, focusing on the areas of digital spectral analysis, design of FIR filters, pulse compression radar, and speech signal processing. Comprehensively reviewing previous research and recent developments, this book: Provides suggestions on how to choose a window function for particular applications Discusses Fourier analysis techniques and pitfalls in the computation of the DFT Introduces window functions in the continuous-time and discrete-time domains Considers two implementation strategies of window functions in the time- and frequency domain Explores well-known applications of window functions in the fields of radar, sonar, biomedical signal analysis, audio processing, and synthetic aperture radar

This study offers a novel approach to a longstanding problem in Slavic Linguistics, the formal representation of the Northern Russian participial constructions in -n(o)/-t(o). Unlike previous works, the methodological stance adopted by the author focuses on singling out all the relevant patterns of variation and on pursuing a unified explanation for them. The key to the solution of the puzzle is the idea that the participial affix -n-/-t- and the agreement inflections are not just pieces of morphology inserted post-syntactically, but true heads that enter the computation and are able to manipulate the argumental roles of the verb and to check the EPP. The author’s proposal is properly framed in the context of current debate on interlanguage variation.

The article offers an account of the recent debate on work, freedom and utopia in the French humanities and social sciences. It is organized around the four thematic cores that seem to condense its richest or most promising results today: liberated work, free work, democratic work, and utopian work. For each of these topics, for reasons of space, only the theses and critiques of a few representative authors will be given, regarding an object of reflection chosen as exemplary: liberated companies, digital platforms, democratized companies, possible utopias. The common denominator of this reflections is the tenacity with which they continue to investigate dimensions of freedom and utopia in work, and not outside or against work. What differentiates them is the degree of compatibility or alternative attributed to these dimensions with respect to the most widespread modes of work today.

This paper aims to contribute to the study of female social mobility through marriage, by presenting a study case for north-eastern Catalonia, during the second half of the 18th century. This is a region where there was a strong system of impartible inheritance based on male primogeniture, so that it was women who moved into the families of the heirs, while paying a dowry accordingly. It is precisely the combination of the value of the dowry with the occupation of the bride's and groom's family that permits to better understand the dynamics of social mobility that brides experienced at the time of marriage. The results obtained suggest that male primogeniture pushed many women towards downward social mobility, despite certain mechanisms to mitigate it.

In its constructive and speculative nature, design has the critical potential to reshape prevalent socio-material realities. At the same time, design is inevitably normative, if not often violent, as it stabilises the past, normalises the present, and precludes just and sustainable futures. The contributions rethink concepts of critique that influence the field of design, question inherent blind spots of the discipline, and expand understandings of what critical design practices could be. With contributions from design theory, practice and education, art theory, philosophy, and informatics, »Critical by Design?« aims to question and unpack the ambivalent tensions between design and critique.

While there has been renewed interest in Marx recently, we cannot simply apply his more than 170-year-old texts to today's world. Across the disciplinary boundaries of philosophy, sociology, literary and cultural studies, this volume reworks Marxist critique for the twenty-first century. Capitalism, after all, has not only taken on new shapes, but, in the age of climate and care crisis, police violence, mass incarceration and global migration, it has also found new ways of exploiting and fragmenting the global workforce. The book’s key contribution is to link the embodied experiences of those fragmented workers – Marx’s Black, feminist, trans and queer »others« – with the pressing challenge of creating and mobilizing a political subject under the current iteration of capitalism.

Medical innovations and demographic change will further exacerbate the financial situation in the German healthcare system in the coming years. The evidence-based allocation of the limited funds available will therefore become increasingly important. From an ethical perspective, allocation decisions should be based on clearly defined procedures and criteria. So far, however, there are no concrete approaches on how this explicit performance control can be implemented in practice. The book provides an overview of the results of the interdisciplinary research association ""Allocation"", which for the first time examined the possibilities and limits of explicit performance management in two selected practical areas (interventional cardiology and intensive care medicine). Two exemplary cost-sensitive guidelines have been developed that enable an evidence-based balance between efficiency and justice. The legal requirements for such an explicit benefit management in statutory health insurance were examined in detail. Healthcare professionals and patients were asked for their assessments of the strengths and weaknesses of the cost-sensitive guidelines.

Available open access digitally under CC-BY-NC-ND licence. This groundbreaking book is the first to put housing, property and planning data at the centre of critical analysis. While such data shape key decisions about housing and urban development, little attention has been paid to the politics and praxes of their production and use. Bringing together international and interdisciplinary perspectives, the book examines how governments, real estate and PropTech industries, and civil society actors create, process, share and use housing, planning and property data. Covering themes from tokenized real estate to tenant data activism, it offers a vital reflection on data power and justice in contemporary urban governance.

Since the dawn of the oil era, cities in Saudi Arabia have witnessed rapid growth and profound societal changes. As a response to foreign architectural solutions and the increasing popularity of Western lifestyles, a distinct style of architecture and urban planning has emerged. Characterised by an emphasis on privacy, expressed through high enclosures, gates, blinds, and tinted windows, ‘New Islamic Urbanism’ constitutes for some an important element of piety. For others, it enables alternative ways of life, indulgence in banned social practices, and the formation of both publics and counterpublics.

Gregory Bateson (1904–1980) began his career as an anthropologist in the 1930s, yet Bateson has also been recognized as an important early practitioner of ethnographic filmmaking, a key figure in the early development of cybernetics, and a point of reference for environmental artists and activists. In fact, Bateson was an important environmental thinker who was sounding the alarm about global warming and runaway patterns of consumption fifty years ago. His research connected the symptoms of ecological crisis to deeply rooted systems of Western thought. Bateson's Alphabet draws on archival sources—Bateson's public presentations, classroom seminars, and recorded memos—to provide an engaging and accessible, online, hyperlinked interface with Bateson's system of ecological thought. Bateson's Alphabet is composed of short, alphabetized essays that put Bateson in conversation with current scholarship in the environmental humanities and ground his ideas in a concrete example from a media text. The hyperlinked text allows readers to take multiple paths through the text. Whichever path is chosen, each step allows for a rich, multimodal encounter with Bateson's ideas through media analysis and images from the films under discussion. The resulting resource offers a new way to experience Bateson's ecology of mind and fosters new interdisciplinary connections within the environmental humanities.
