Being a home to more than 80 ethnic groups, Ethiopia has to balance normative diversity with efforts to implement state law across its territory. This volume explores the co-existence of state, customary, and religious legal forums from the perspective of legal practitioners and local justice seekers. It shows how the various stakeholders' use of negotiation, and their strategic application of law can lead to unwanted confusion, but also to sustainable conflict resolution, innovative new procedures and hybrid norms. The book thus generates important knowledge on the conditions necessary for stimulating a cooperative co-existence of different legal systems.

This book describes the Improving Inclusive Innovation Outcomes (i3o) research programme (2022–25). This work recognises that place-based economic growth in the 21st century is called to deliver more equitable and sustainable outcomes that address social challenges. The i3o programme focuses on inclusive innovation in urban innovation districts: geographical concentrations of assets and amenities designed to deliver economic growth for their host cities. i3o engaged with four cities in post-industrial (Newcastle, Pittsburgh) and post-conflict (Medellín, Belfast) cities. Each city’s innovation district express commitments to inclusive growth and is shifting towards a new model – what the authors define here as Innovation Districts 2.0. This emerging model repositions innovation policy around purposeful leadership, community engagement and place-based strategic alignment. The authors argue that these cities reflect steps toward a new best-practice model that other existing and potential innovation districts can learn from and integrate in their own cities. An Innovation District 2.0 will be characterised by purposeful inclusive innovation: leadership and management; by proactive community engagement and placemaking; and by strategic alignment and territorial equity awareness of their contributions to relevant city growth strategies. All three characteristics of the framework will deliver inclusion-rich local strengths that enable Innovation Districts 2.0 to look beyond copying orthodox global best practice to be the best innovation district they can be for their city-region. This work will be accessible and actionable for all members of urban innovation ecosystems, whether from the community, government, academia or industry. It sets out what the authors intend to be a broader research agenda to assist innovation districts deliver broader social outcomes. Innovation has always been in the forefront of delivering change; this book seeks to ensure that all places have the methods and tools available to deliver that change inclusively and successfully.

Juventus is a national symbol, the most loved club by Italian people, but also the most hated. The disdained, the hostility, the controversial that follows this team has no equal in the history of Italian sport. The anijuventinism is a cultural phenomena very complex that meets the history and the evolution of Italian football and also the whole country. All the controversy about the “Vecchia Signora” (the “Old Lady”) are the football projection of strong and deep feelings as the rejection of authority, conspiracy, populism and suspect about the institutions. Thanks to a historical analysis, this book tries to tell about a popular history that goes beyond football.

Historian Jane McCabe leads us through a compelling research journey that began with uncovering the story of her own grandmother, Lorna Peters, one of 130 adolescents resettled in New Zealand under the scheme between 1908 and 1938. Using records from the ‘Homes’ in Kalimpong and in-depth interviews with other descendants in New Zealand, she crafts a compelling, evocative, and unsentimental yet moving narrative - one that not only brings an untold part of imperial history to light, but also transforms previously broken and hushed family histories into an extraordinary collective story. This book attends to both the affective dimension of these traumatic familial disruptions, and to the larger economic and political drivers that saw government and missionary schemes breaking up Anglo-Indian families - schemes that relied on future forgetting.

We tend to feel that works of fiction give us special access to lived experience. But how do novels cultivate that feeling? Where exactly does experience reside? The Location of Experience argues that, paradoxically, novels create experience for us not by bringing reality up close, but by engineering environments in which we feel constrained from acting. By excavating the history of the rise of experience as an important category of Victorian intellectual life, this book reveals how experience was surprisingly tied to emotions of remorse and regret for some of the era’s great women novelists: the Brontës, George Eliot, Margaret Oliphant, and Elizabeth Gaskell. It shows how these writers passed ideas about experience—and experiences themselves—among each other.Drawing on intellectual history, psychology, and moral philosophy, The Location of Experience shows that, through manipulating the psychological dimensions of fiction’s formal features, Victorian women novelists produced a philosophical account of experience that rivaled and complemented that of the male philosophers of the period.

Behind the image of lightness and immateriality of the digital lies an iceberg of hyper-exploitation of labour, resource consumption, and pollution along the value chains. The M-E-L-G matrix guides the analysis of the production processes that make digitalisation possible, examined through the lens of ‘digital noxiousness’: from mining extractivism to semiconductors, from the energy and water consumption of data centres to electronic waste. At the core emerges ‘digitarchy’, the regime of the digital social order, in which the power of the technology giants intertwines and clashes with forms of bottom-up action, contributing to the redefinition of global inequalities.

In 2011, political protests sprang up across the world. In the Middle East, Europe, Latin America, the United States unlikely people sparked or led massive protest campaigns from the Arab Spring to Occupy Wall Street. These protests were made up of educated and precariously employed young people who challenged the legitimacy of their political leaders, exposed a failure of representation, and expressed their dissatisfaction with their place in the aftermath of financial and economic crisis. This book interrogates what impacts—if any—this global protest cycle had on politics and policy and shows the sometimes unintended ways it continues to influence contemporary political dynamics throughout the world. Proposing a new framework of analysis that calls attention to the content and claims of protests, their global connections, and the responsiveness of political institutions to protest demands, this is one of the few books that not only asks how protest movements are formed but also provides an in-depth examination of what protest movements can accomplish. With contributions examining the political consequences of protest, the roles of social media and the internet in protest organization, left- and right-wing movements in the United States, Chile’s student movements, the Arab Uprisings, and much more this collection is essential reading for all those interested in the power of protest to shape our world.

A few weeks before van Gogh admitted himself into a mental hospital in Saint-Rémy in spring 1889 he had written to Gauguin that he wanted to create a “consolatory art for distressed hearts”. From his bedroom in the clinic he overlooked an enclosed wheat field. Over the course of a year the seasonal changes inspired Van Gogh to paint a cycle of this wheat field, thereby seeing it as an allegorical representation of the fate of human life, which comforted him.

The South African UNESCO world heritage site of Mapungubwe Cultural Landscape became the site of a conflict in 2011, when a coal mine was built in close proximity. The area of tension evolved around matters of conservation of culture, socio-economic development, environmental and nature protection, as well as the generation of identity. Following the conflict and its actors, the author shows the valorisation/valuation of Mapungubwe's resources as well as processes of propertisation against the backdrop of the special obstacles after the end of apartheid. Utilising interdisciplinary research approaches and an understanding of resource as a relational assemblage, the author follows the shifting of discourses between conservation of culture and extraction of resources from the local to the international level. She shows that power of interpretation is bound to time, place and actors when it comes to constituting cultural property.
