In this volume curators, artists and scientists reflect on current forms of critical and solidary practice in and around 'white' cultural and educational institutions.

This book explores how different classroom discourses and concepts of knowledge permeate teaching in high- and low-performance classrooms. Drawing on empirical research from classrooms in Sweden, it presents a theory-based framework for classroom research. The book examines the central concepts of knowledge, curriculum, pedagogy and equity to discuss differences in access to knowledge and the implications of these differences for students’ future opportunities and wellbeing. It analyses the relationships between different teaching factors and discusses teaching from democratic perspectives developed within curriculum theory. Combining insights from curriculum theory with insights from sociolinguistic and sociocultural classroom research, this project breaks new ground in how knowledge from curriculum content is recontextualised into concrete teaching practices in the context of a standards-based curriculum. Providing valuable insights into the intersections between classroom practice, student performance and teacher expectations, this book will be of great interest to academics, researchers and post-graduate students in the fields of curriculum research, education policy, teacher education and classroom practice.

This book offers the first systematic account in English of the Spanish mass press coverage of ‘jihadist terrorist’ attacks in contemporary Spain. Drawing upon a critical analysis of the ‘Spanish Transition to Democracy’ (1975–82) and ‘War on Terror’ narratives, it examines the ideology underlying the metaphors used in the Spanish mainstream press coverage of the terrorist attacks in Madrid (2004) and Barcelona (2017). The book shows how these metaphors were systematically deployed for propagandistic purposes that sought to ‘manufacture the consent’ of the Spanish population while obstructing public deliberation apropos the attacks, strengthening Spanish ‘democracy’ by defining it in opposition to ‘jihadist terrorism.’ This book will be of interest to students of Critical Terrorism Studies, Spanish Politics, Media Studies, and Security Studies. Many early novels were cosmopolitan books, read from London to Leipzig and beyond, available in nearly simultaneous translations into French, English, German, and other European languages. In Novel Translations, Bethany Wiggin charts just one of the paths by which newness—in its avatars as fashion, novelties, and the novel—entered the European world in the decades around 1700. As readers across Europe snapped up novels, they domesticated the genre. Across borders, the novel lent readers everywhere a suggestion of sophistication, a familiarity with circumstances beyond their local ken. Into the eighteenth century, the modern German novel was not German at all; rather, it was French, as suggested by Germans' usage of the French word Roman to describe a wide variety of genres: pastoral romances, war and travel chronicles, heroic narratives, and courtly fictions. Carried in large part on the coattails of the Huguenot diaspora, these romans, nouvelles, amours secrets, histoires galantes, and histories scandaleuses shaped German literary culture to a previously unrecognized extent. Wiggin contends that this French chapter in the German novel's history began to draw to a close only in the 1720s, more than sixty years after the word first migrated into German. Only gradually did the Roman go native; it remained laden with the baggage from its "French" origins even into the nineteenth century.

At present, Macedonia is again increasingly present in the German-speaking media discourse, in particular due to the so-called "name dispute" with Greece. But what is it when we talk about Macedonia? The media representation of the region often remains diffuse and is strongly influenced by stereotypes. In his comprehensive analysis, Benjamin Langer shows for the first time how this south-eastern European region was shaped in German-language texts from a terra incognita on the periphery of Europe and provided with attributions. In ten thematic chapters, he shows how powerful these images are despite their contradictions and changing instrumentalization to this day.

In the scope of this work, a novel joining process was developed and investi-gated from both an application-driven and an academic point of view. The process utilises laser radiation to melt a CuSn-braze preform, which is subse-quently detached from a ceramic capillary via inert gas overpressure. After a flight phase, the braze droplet impinges on the joining interface and wets the joining partners where it forms a metallurgical bond after solidification. This process is referred to as laser drop on demand joining (LDJ). It was shown that the shear strength of the joints exceeds the strength of standard tin-based solders by a factor of two and the joints are able to withstand the tempera-tures and forces occurring during an Al-Casting process. In addition, an ana-lytic model was developed, enabling to quantify the absorptance and thermal energy losses by heat convection, conduction, and radiation, by measuring the time required to melt the preform.

One of the most famous monuments of Petra is considered by questioning its nature as a sepulchral monument, generally accepted. In the light of its architecture and its topographical location, other possible functions are cautiously taken into consideration.

This article explores the phenomenon of nostalgia for the Soviet era found in contemporary Russian society and manifested both in contemporary art, such as in the installations of Il'ja Kabakov, Sergej Volkov, and Jevgenij Fiks, and in modern literature, especially in the prose of Andrej Astvacaturov. Such regret for a bygone past primarily mourns not the apparatus of the Soviet state, but the routine and the quality of familiar daily life. Insights from the fields of visual studies and trauma studies undergird this exploration of the relationship between a work of art's visual composition and its representation of toska, memory, and material culture in the Soviet era. By juxtaposing artwork with literary prose, we reveal the significant role had by 'reflective' toska-nostalgia (as defined by Svetlana Boym, 2001) in the formation of post-Soviet identity.

Jahrhunderts.

This comparative study examines the emergence and political significance of lunatics’ rights activism in Europe between 1870 and 1920. In writing the history of the criticism of psychiatry, scholars have so far mainly focused on the second half of the twentieth century. This chapter, however, shows that the decades around 1900 already saw a widespread criticism ‘from below’ accompanying the professionalisation and modernisation of European psychiatry. The comparative analysis of the careers of two key campaign leaders, Louisa Lowe (1820–1901) in England and Adolf Glöklen (1861–c.1935) in Germany, reveals the similarities and differences in their motives, ways of campaigning, mobilisation success and political agency at the individual and collective level. Drawing on concepts from the political sociology of social movements and disability history, the chapter highlights the connections between early lunatics’ rights activism and socio-historical categories like ‘class’, ‘gender’ and ‘body’ and identifies these campaigns as political predecessors of the contemporary consumer/survivor/ex-patient movement.
