Digital Stylistics is an area of research at the intersection of Literary Studies, Linguistics, Digital Humanities, and Computational Literary Studies. It is concerned with the computational and statistical analysis of literary style and of style in language use. This volume brings together research in Digital Stylistics from Romance Studies and beyond, contributing to new methods and applications in different language contexts and literatures. All the research results are based on the empirical, computational analysis of literary corpora chosen to analyze major genres or subgenres of poetry, drama, and prose from the nineteenth to the twenty-first century.

The ebook edition of this title is Open Access and freely available to read online. Our culture has an uneasy relationship with repetition and sameness. On the one hand, we find familiarity pleasurable and soothing; on the other, we crave novelty and long for a sense of discovery. We blame algorithms, intent on selling us more of the same, and on a media industry too greedy to risk investing in intellectually challenging, radically new, products. Sameness and Repetition in Contemporary Media Culture takes a comprehensive approach that both theorises and historically grounds the idea of repetition in relation to media as something that is deeply embedded in our cultural tradition. This project received funding from the Carlsberg Foundation.

This book brings development theory and practice into dialogue with the religious tradition, in order to construct a new, trans-disciplinary vision of development, with integral ecology at its heart. It focuses on the Catholic social tradition and its conception of integral human development on the one hand, and on the works of economist and philosopher Amartya Sen which underpin the human development approach on the other. The book discusses how these two perspectives can mutually enrich other around three areas: their views on the concept and meaning of development and progress; their understanding of what it is to be human, that is, their anthropological vision; and their analysis of transformational pathways for addressing social and environmental degradation. The book examines how both human development and the Catholic social tradition can function as complementary analytical lenses and mobilizing frames for embarking on the journey of structural and personal transformation to bring all life systems, human and non-human, back into balance. This book is written for researchers and students in development studies, theology, and religious studies, as well as professional audiences in development organisations.

Science Under the Yoke of Value examines how science today is fundamentally governed not by an autonomous quest for knowledge and truth, or by the advancement of society, but by coercion to cater to a machinery that feeds on, and in its turn produces, self‑implicating values of “quality”, “impact”, or “productivity”, with disruptive consequences for scientific life as a whole. Drawing on phenomenological analysis and the insights of thinkers like Plato, Aristotle, Galilei, Kant, Husserl, Einstein, Heidegger, and Arendt, this book exposes how scholarly pursuits worldwide have become subjugated by non‑scientific values. It challenges the uncritical acceptance of evaluation practices that threaten to transform academia into a self‑perpetuating system where scholars labour under what the authors aptly term “the yoke of value”. Readers will gain profound insights into the philosophical underpinnings of academic evaluation, moving beyond common discussions of “bureaucratization” or “corporatization” to question the very concept of value that drives these systems. This book uniquely interrogates why enormous resources are devoted to evaluation systems without examining whether these values truly serve science or society, thereby diverting attention from the true menace to present‑day scientific enquiry. This critical analysis helps scholars understand the mechanisms that “magically” prevent questioning of the system itself, offering a framework to recognize how scientific autonomy has been compromised and what this means for the advancement of knowledge. This volume will appeal to STEM scholars, philosophers, and social scientists alike, interested in scientific integrity and the autonomy of research. University administrators, policymakers, and anyone concerned with the purposes and trajectory of scientific research in contemporary society will find this analysis essential for understanding the current crisis in scientific and academic life.

Ship careening, which consists of stripping antifouling paint, generates waste. These residues contain different chemical contaminants that can have an impact on the marine environment. The implementation of the Marine Environment Strategy Framework Directive has been declined through the adoption of Action Plans. Cerema was mandated by the Ministry of Ecology to carry out a national study identifying the level of equipment in fairing areas of marinas, anchorages and private shipyards. The data collected are available on the Geolittoral site: www.geolittoral.developpement-durable.gouv.fr

Lenin Reloaded is a rallying call by some of the world’s leading Marxist intellectuals for renewed attention to the significance of Vladimir Lenin. The volume’s editors explain that it was Lenin who made Karl Marx’s thought explicitly political, who extended it beyond the confines of Europe, who put it into practice. They contend that a focus on Lenin is urgently needed now, when global capitalism appears to be the only game in town, the liberal-democratic system seems to have been settled on as the optimal political organization of society, and it has become easier to imagine the end of the world than a modest change in the mode of production. Lenin retooled Marx’s thought for specific historical conditions in 1914, and Lenin Reloaded urges a reinvention of the revolutionary project for the present. Such a project would be Leninist in its commitment to action based on truth and its acceptance of the consequences that follow from action.

In a society that aims above all to safeguard life, how might we reckon with ethical responsibility when we are complicit in sacrificial economies that produce and tolerate death as a necessity of life? Arguing that biopower can be fully exposed only through an analysis of those whom society has “let die,” Stuart J. Murray employs a series of transdisciplinary case studies to uncover the structural and rhetorical conditions through which biopower works. These case studies include the concept of “sacrifice” in the “war” against COVID-19, where emergent cultures of pandemic “resistance” are explored alongside suicide bombings and military suicides; the California mass hunger strikes of 2013; legal cases involving “preventable” and “untimely” childhood deaths, exposing the irreconcilable claims of anti-vaxxers and Indigenous peoples; and the videorecording of the death of a disabled Black man. Murray demonstrates that active resistance to biopower inevitably reproduces tropes of “making live” and “letting die.” His counter to this fact is a critical stance of disaffirmation, one in which death disrupts the politics of life itself. A philosophically nuanced critique of biopower, The Living from the Dead is a meditation on life, death, power, language, and control in the twenty-first century. It will appeal to students and scholars of rhetoric, philosophy, and critical theory.

This book explores game production across regional, national and global contexts. Notably, the widespread adoption of remote working practices in the video games sector challenged the entrenched idea of place-based industry clusters. The theme of “clustering” as a process enables analysis across scales, placing local games industries in the context of global forces and wider creative industries at a time of significant dynamism and change. Focusing on the idea of the video game production cluster, this book draws upon academic research, across creative industries and innovation clusters in multiple regional and national contexts, to explore the contribution of multidisciplinary, cultural influence, diversity and cluster infrastructure to business success. Through 17 scholarly chapters and three expert interviews, Creative Clustering and the Video Games Industry highlights the crucial interactions between universities, creative research and development, and cross-sector innovation in driving the future of the games industry. This essential collection will establish current knowledge and methods for understanding video game creative clusters in context.

This book examines the role of Persian literature in politics in the tumultuous period of Iranian history from 1950 to 2000, illustrating how intellectuals used poetry, plays, novels and short stories to comment on socio-political developments. The unique aspect of the book is its strong empirical perspective as it analyses how Persian intellectuals dealt with sensor, suppression, imprisonment, exile and even execution for the sake of expression of free speech. Karimi-Hakkak’s methodology is also unique as he applies theoretical perspectives of various disciplines to produce a multi-faceted work, which provide the reader with a concise socio-political history based on the interaction between literature and politics. ‘A Fire of Lilies’ will therefore make a significant contribution to the research on modern Persian literature as well as literary historiography.

"The European Investment Bank (EIB) has a long track record as a provider of development and climate finance, working with EU institutions, Member States and partner countries in the EU neighbourhood, sub-Saharan Africa and around the world to foster sustainable development and bring real benefits to people’s lives. The challenges faced by our partners around the world are many: economies struggle to provide adequate jobs and basic infrastructure, while dealing with the growing needs for climate action and protection of the environment. These challenges have been aggravated by the coronavirus pandemic and the ramifications of the conflict in Ukraine. As of the start of 2022, the EIB’s development finance role is being taken forward and intensified through EIB Global. The new structure builds on the strength and experience that the EIB has gained working outside Europe to mobilise more development and climate finance, and increase impact. The purpose of this report is twofold. First, it provides an overview of the Bank’s activities outside the European Union in 2021, with a focus on the expected results, complemented by reporting on the results already achieved by past operations. Second, it elaborates on the context of the Bank’s engagement in countries outside Europe, examining different development challenges and how they confront different regions, drawing on our own development research."
