Abstract

Laboratory digitization can dramatically improve automation, quality control, and data analysis, reduce human error, and ensure process reproducibility. However, cybersecurity threats can compromise sensitive data and disrupt laboratory operations. High-profile incidents, such as those at Oxford University and South Africa's National Health Laboratory, illustrate the potential dangers, including ransomware attacks and data breaches that can lead to financial losses and reputational damage. To mitigate these risks, an integrated risk management approach that includes both organizational and technical measures is critical. It covers the development and operation of IT services and takes into account evolving technologies such as robotics, artificial intelligence, and augmented reality. This enables labs to safely realize the potential of digital innovation, maintain control over complex environments, and foster trust and reliability. Ultimately, the balance between leveraging digital advances and managing cybersecurity threats is essential for sustainable progress in laboratory operations.
