Cybersecurity
Abstract
This chapter considers the concept of cybersecurity, different approaches to defining this concept, contents included in different definitions, its referent objects as well as actors in this domain. It is based upon the central research question: What are the core values, frameworks, and challenges of cyberspace and cybersecurity? In an effort to contribute to the understanding of this rapidly evolving field, the chapter also analyses the terms like “cyberspace,” “cyberthreats,” “cyberattacks,” “cyber warfare,” “cyberwar” and “cybercrime.” It highlights the wide range of actors operating in the digital environment at different levels, including individuals, business associations, states, standardization bodies, and international organizations. In addition to the discussion on cybersecurity within the academic discipline of security studies, it attempts to highlight its increasing importance in the strategic security considerations of states, alliances and international organizations. Considering the multiplicity of actors that operate in the cybersecurity arena, the rapid development of digital technologies, the rise of geopolitical tensions, as well as the fact that this issue is multidimensional, the chapter advocates a holistic approach to the concept of cybersecurity, which combines technical, societal, political and (inter/national) security aspects.
