The Development of Education in East Africa.
Overview & Synopsis
The aim of this book is to try to describe collectively the educational situations in all three East African countries: Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania (exclusive of Zanzibar and Pemba), with special reference to teacher education. The book provides historical background and utilizes the social sciences in its comparative analyses. Beginning with a chapter on the background and structure of education in East Africa, with special emphases on the difficulties of describing current trends with accuracy, it continues with three chapters on the history of East African education. Topics include the impact of the West, church and state relations, and organization and administration of education. The remaining chapters are: Inspection and Supervision, The Development of Teacher Education, The Teaching Profession, Teacher Education Today, Institutes of Education, Selection and Examination, Education Plans and Planning, Social Education and The East African Child and Student. Written initially for American Teacher educators teaching in East African teachers colleges, the book is laced with practical tips for them, especially in the last chapter. Appended are outlines, diagrams, and statistical tables illustrating salary scales and teacher categories, institutes of education and school enrollment. (Author/DJB)
