A Work System Team Perspective for AI in Higher Education
Overview & Synopsis
Artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming higher education through personalized learning, teaching assistance and productivity aids, and more efficient administrative processes. Yet, treating AI as a tool may limit its benefit to education systems. What if, instead, AI were integrated as a teammate working alongside students, faculty, and staff? This stimulus essay invites higher education leaders and education technology researchers to explore a work system team perspective to address AI implementation in higher education, particularly in public institutions charged with delivering high-quality education to a large and diverse student body, sustainably. However, this perspective may also be useful to other types of institutions (e.g., smaller colleges) because a common premise of AI in education is to support the work of education across various contexts.
