Overview & Synopsis

A brief yet comprehensive general picture of the structure, support, practices, and principles of Canadian education, this booklet presents a basic overview of information about education at the national, provincial, and state levels. Emphasis is on elementary and secondary education. A chapter on the provincial structure of education includes short entries on such areas as departments of education, financing, school-year length, school attendance, diplomas, curriculum and textbooks. A chapter on schools contains short notes on such areas as elementary schools, secondary schools, private schools, special schools, technical and vocational education, enrollment trends, and continuing education. This second edition updates information presented in the 1974 edition and includes a revised appendix of short descriptions of national educational organizations, notes on some federal departments and agencies that have an interest in education, and a brief list of books and reports for further reading. An edition was also issued in French. (Author/JM)
