Overview & Synopsis

The objective of the Additional Financing of the Water Supply and Sanitation Investment Project for Tajikistan is to improve access to safely managed water supply services in selected districts; and to strengthen the capacity of institutions in the water supply and sanitation sector for improved service delivery. The AF will cover the financing gap resulting from cost overruns for water supply investments and enable the Government of Tajikistan to enhance the PDO of the original project by expanding the benefits to additional underserved rural communities, in the most WASH-deprived Khatlon region. In line with the original Project, the additional grant-funded investments will particularly benefit women and children, in terms of time savings from collection of water and reduced illnesses. It will also reduce the discomfort and stress associated with the lack of access to safely managed WSS and thus help improve the economic situation and well-being of the people in the Project areas. The AF will finance water supply expansion works, including the distribution system in 14 villages in Vakhsh, 10 villages in Balkhi and 1 village in Vose districts for a total of 25 villages, deriving water from the VIDS and Gulteppa water intake; thus, expanding the benefits from the bulk water infrastructure financed under the parent project.
