How does Social Protection Impact Social Cohesion in the Sahel? : Preliminary Findings of Qualitative Research
Overview & Synopsis
Social cohesion has become an increasingly important issue in the Sahel and for the social protection sector. In the region, vulnerability, poverty, competition over natural resources, and limited economic opportunities have weakened social bonds and contributed to conflict. In this context, policies and programs aimed at reducing poverty and addressing the drivers of vulnerability, such as social protection initiatives, have the potential to strengthen social cohesion. Understanding the relationship between social protection and social cohesion is essential to maximize these positive effects while avoiding unintended negative consequences. Although social protection can influence social cohesion in multiple ways, relatively few studies have systematically examined these effects in the Sahel.
