Recovering Ukraine’s Agricultural Wealth – Transitioning to Sustainable Irrigation
Overview & Synopsis
This report provides a comprehensive assessment of the feasibility of transitioning from rainfed to irrigated agriculture in Ukraine, using integrated agro-hydrological and economic modeling. The analysis evaluates irrigation requirements under both baseline (1991-2020) and future climate conditions (2021-2050), quantifies water availability, and assesses the economic viability of irrigation expansion in different regions. The study identifies priority areas where irrigation can be expanded within environmental limits, providing a science-based foundation for prioritizing investments and guiding resilient agricultural development, serving as a critical policy tool for decisionmakers planning the future of Ukraine’s post-war reconstruction efforts. The study establishes clear environmental, hydrological, and economic boundary conditions to guide sustainable irrigation expansion in Ukraine
