Overview & Synopsis

The main objective of the Safer Schools Thematic Area (GPSS), launched in 2014 with support from the Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery (GFDRR), is to support decision making for large-scale investments for the safety and resilience of new and existing school infrastructure at risk from natural hazards and contribute to quality learning environments. For these investments to be realistic, practical, and sustainable, they need to be based on reasonably accurate data on the current state and performance of the school building stock in a country, the level of hazard they are exposed to, and the level of risk they embody for the school population in any given country. The Global Library of School Infrastructure (GLOSI 1.0) was launched by the GPSS in 2019 (The World Bank, 2019) to facilitate the collection of this data and to create a knowledge base to support these large-scale risk reduction projects.
