Overview & Synopsis

This project monitors fishing activity in the Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZs) of the Pacific Island Countries (PICs). The main source of fishing activity is Global Fishing Watch, which is combined with emissions estimates derived from Automatic Identification System (AIS) data on the UN Global Platform. The vessel’s identity is added and physical characteristics (IMO, flag, gear, tonnage, build year, engine power, length) from ship register data, and its authorization status from the WCPFC Record of Fishing Vessels. The result is a fishing vessel-day record covering activity, vessel characteristics, authorization, and emissions.
