Amalia Witt sheds light on questions of inheriting and bequeathing texts based on the extraordinary friendship between the author Montaigne and Marie de Gournay, one of the first female editors and authors of the early modern period. The focus of the study lies on the literary and social environment of Marie de Gournay, who, as an unmarried woman who lived alone and and was deeply interested in politics, followed an unusual path in life for the time. The analysis not only reveals the remarkable creative potential of this special connection, but also questions hegemonic role rnodels in literature that still have an impact today.
