Poverty in Nigeria in 2023 : Triangulating Various Sources
Overview & Synopsis
This note triangulates various data sources to estimate the trend in extreme poverty - that is, those living on less than $3.00 per day international poverty line in 2021 purchasing power parity - in Nigeria after 2018. Extreme poverty in Nigeria has risen significantly from 34.2 percent in 2018-19 to 41.8 percent in 2022-23 according to the 2022-23 Nigeria Living Standards Surveys, or from 37.1 percent in 2018-19 to 48.3 percent in 2023-24 according the 2023-24 General Household Survey-Panel. There is considerable volatility especially in 2023, so different fieldwork timing can lead to differences in results. Microsimulation using the 2018-19 survey and trends in macroeconomic indicators confirm these broad patterns.
