Ghana 10th Economic Update : Reset for Growth - Sustaining Macroeconomic Recovery and Unlocking Transport for Transformation
Overview & Synopsis
This report, the 10th Ghana Economic Update (August 2026), assesses Ghana’s progress in restoring macroeconomic stability following the 2022–23 economic crisis and explores how transport sector reforms can support long-term growth, job creation, and economic transformation. The report highlights strong recovery indicators, including robust GDP growth, declining inflation, improved fiscal performance, strengthened external balances, and significant progress in debt restructuring. However, it notes that these gains remain vulnerable to external shocks, commodity price volatility, fiscal pressures, and structural constraints that continue to limit inclusive growth and employment generation. A special focus is placed on Ghana’s transport sector, identifying it as a critical enabler of competitiveness, productivity, and regional integration. The report finds that persistent challenges such as inadequate maintenance financing, fragmented institutional governance, weak multimodal connectivity, road safety concerns, and climate vulnerabilities constrain the sector’s effectiveness. It recommends six priority reform pillars: sustainable maintenance financing, stronger transport sector coordination, freight-led rail revitalization, targeted road safety interventions, climate-resilient infrastructure, and expanded digital logistics systems. By addressing these bottlenecks, Ghana can better translate macroeconomic recovery into broad-based job creation, improved market access, reduced transport costs, and more inclusive economic development.
