Overview & Synopsis

This bulletin reports the results of a study conducted to obtain information on State certification requirements. A letter in the form of a questionnaire was sent to all 48 State departments of education requesting information on their requirements for certification of: (1) Secondary physical education teachers; (2) Secondary health education teachers; (3) Secondary supervisors of physical education; (4) Secondary directors of health and physical education; and (5) Secondary school athletic coaches. The material included in this bulletin presents a summary of each State's requirements, examination of which indicates a lack of uniformity and difference in nomenclature, hour requirements, course content, and overall scope of the program. Appended is a table: Minimum State Requirements for the Certification of Secondary School Teachers in Health Education and Physical Education, and for Athletic Coaches.
