Overview & Synopsis

The Sustainable Renewables Risk Mitigation Initiative’s (SRMI’s) Renewables Capacity Building Program (further referred to as the Program) is a 9-month hybrid capacity-building initiative developed under the SRMI and implemented in partnership with the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) via GET.transform and the Power Futures Lab (PFL) at the University of Cape Town. SRMI supports governments in creating environments conducive to privately led renewable energy projects. By offering technical assistance, concessional funding for targeted public investments, and innovative risk mitigation instruments, SRMI aims to mitigate private-sector risks while reducing public-sector exposure. This comprehensive approach, leveraging the expertise of each Partner, is essential for overcoming barriers and mobilizing the necessary investments for a successful energy transition. The Program supports African governments in planning, preparing, and implementing bankable renewable energy tenders for solar, wind, and storage technologies, leveraging international best practices and private IPP investment. The hybrid program included seven online learning sessions and two in-person week-long workshops hosted by the Power Future’s Lab at the University of Cape Town on November 11–15, 2024 and June 9–13, 2025.
