Sri Lanka - Maternal and Early Childhood Nutrition Services Project

Overview & Synopsis

​The objective of the Maternal and Early Childhood Nutrition Services Project for Sri Lanka is to increase access to selected community-based nutrition interventions by pregnant and lactating women and children under-five in Selected Vulnerable Districts. The proposed project will contribute to the achievement of SDG 2, end hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture. One of the targets for 2030 under SDG 2 is to end all forms of malnutrition by 2030, including achieving, by 2025, the internationally agreed targets on stunting and wasting in children under five years of age, and address the nutritional needs of adolescent girls, pregnant and lactating women, and older persons. The project will contribute to improving the nutritional status of children below five years and pregnant and lactating women by making nutritious food available and enhancing their knowledge to make better food choices. The project is also aligned with the Government of Sri Lanka’s (GoSL) health sector priorities. The project will support the priorities, strategies, and action areas mentioned in the National Emergency Nutrition Plan (2022–2024) by supporting activities to not only enhance the food and nutrition security of the vulnerable population but strengthen the community-level women-led structures (MSGs) to continue their health promotive role alongside mobilizing the community to receive the MCH services by PHMs and other health staff.
