Mobile Money for Direct Facility Financing
Overview & Synopsis
Fintech innovations are widespread, yet their application in health is limited. The use of mobile money has grown exponentially in Africa. By the end of 2018, almost 400 million registered mobile money accounts were registered. These are served by over 130 live mobile money service providers. In some countries, such as Ghana, Kenya, and Zimbabwe, over 60 percent of adults have a registered mobile money account. Mobile money is used widely in the private sector and for various public policy programs such as cash transfers. However, the use of mobile money technology to pay for health service provision remains nascent.
