Pioneering E-Mobility in Malawi : Task 1 - Electric Vehicle (EV) and Infrastructure Demand Assessment
Overview & Synopsis
This study assesses Malawi’s transition to electric vehicles (EVs) as a strategy to reduce carbon emissions, improve energy security, and decrease dependence on imported fossil fuels. With the transport sector accounting for a significant share of national fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, the report examines the economic, environmental, and energy-sector implications of EV adoption in the country. The analysis evaluates Malawi’s transport and electricity sectors, compares the total cost of ownership of electric and conventional vehicles, estimates future EV demand and charging infrastructure requirements, and assesses the electricity grid’s readiness to support increased electrification of transport. The study highlights the potential benefits of accelerated EV adoption, including reduced fuel import costs, improved transport sustainability, and opportunities for new industries and jobs related to vehicle assembly, maintenance, and charging infrastructure, while identifying key considerations for supporting a successful transition.
