Nepal - Country Gender Assessment
Overview & Synopsis
The Nepal Country Gender Assessment (CGA) provides a comprehensive analysis of the gender equality context in Nepal, covering Women’s Economic Opportunities, Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and Human Capital Accumulation, and Women’s Leadership. Its findings suggest that the country has made substantive progress on the inclusion of gender equality in the legal framework and the policy agenda. However, significant gaps remain in the implementation of policies, and in the monitoring and evaluation systems to help ascertain the impacts of interventions. The country has made good progress in some key indicators, such as improvement in girls’ secondary enrollment and maternal health outcomes but severe gaps remain in economic opportunities (such as labor force participation and employment) and quality jobs, which are impacted by gaps in human capital accumulation and the heavy burden of unpaid care and domestic work women bear disproportionately. The CGA presents Three Key Strategic Priorities as they align with the Strategic Objectives of the World Bank Group Gender Strategy 2024–2030. The Three Key Strategic Priorities are: A. Lower Barriers to Women’s Productivity for Increased Economic Participation; B. Support Women in High Growth Sectors, Opportunities, and Entrepreneurship; and C. Mitigate the Impacts of Climate and Natural Disaster Shocks for Women and Girls and Strengthen Their Adaptive Capacities; with Cross-Cutting themes of Institutions, Governance, and Accountability.
