When Enough Is Enough.
Overview & Synopsis
Colleges of education and programs of teacher preparation are targets once again. Although reform plans and proposals stimulated by reactions to the National Commission on Excellence in Education's A Nation at Risk (1983), coupled with attempts from public and private entities to enter the teacher certification arena and the current teacher shortage, have produced a potentially fatal situation, the issue has roots that go much deeper than the present state of affairs. Inextricably tied to the appearance of women on college campuses, colleges of education and teacher education professors have long borne the disdain of arts and science faculties. Beginning with 2000 B.C. Sumeria, the author attempts to chronicle the path by which female students came to comprise slightly more than fifty-six percent of all students enrolled at today's colleges and universities and how colleges of education continue to pay the price.
